Barcelona Close In On La Liga Glory: The Nightmare Scenario Haunting Real Madrid

Barcelona enjoyed an ideal Easter weekend, moving closer to consecutive La Liga championships after stretching their advantage over nearest challengers Real Madrid to seven points.

Álvaro Arbeloa, who had received widespread praise following his side's demolition of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Champions League, accepted full blame for Madrid's stunning loss at relegation-battling Mallorca—a result that clearly galvanized the table-toppers.

Barça suffered a heavy 4–0 loss at the Metropolitano in the Copa del Rey semifinals, yet refused to let that setback affect them on Saturday evening, even after conceding the opening goal.

The visitors benefited from favorable refereeing calls on the key moments, ultimately capitalizing on their numerical superiority when Robert Lewandowski opportunistically converted the rebound from Juan Musso's save past Atlético Madrid's backup goalkeeper deep into stoppage time.

A draw, following Madrid's loss, would scarcely have been catastrophic for the league leaders, but Barcelona's win has propelled them significantly closer to the title. They now have visions of clinching a second straight crown when their fiercest rivals travel to Catalonia next month.

Barcelona Could Win La Liga Title With El Clásico Triumph

With 64 La Liga titles shared between them, El Clásico has historically been a decisive fixture in determining the balance of power at the top of Spanish football. High-stakes clashes between Barcelona and Real Madrid set precedents and send messages, though the pursuing Los Blancos failed to fully capitalize on their win in the opening Clásico of 2025–26 back in October.

Barcelona's now-commanding seven-point cushion means they could potentially be crowned champions with a victory over Madrid at Camp Nou on May 10.

That landmark occasion can unfold if both clubs win their next four La Liga outings. Barcelona face Espanyol, Celta Vigo, Getafe and Osasuna, while Madrid take on Girona, Alavés, Real Betis and Espanyol.

With Champions League quarterfinal commitments to factor in and the division's top two having combined for nine losses this season, sustaining perfect records over the coming month is far from certain.

Barcelona simply need to be seven, eight or nine points ahead heading into that fixture to clinch the title with a Clásico win. The Catalan club could even wrap things up before the May showdown if they win their next three games and Madrid drop all three of theirs.

Has This Have Ever Happened Before?

For the men's team, no. However, in 2022, the dominant Barcelona Femení secured their third consecutive league crown with a commanding 5–0 victory over Real Madrid Femení in mid-March. At that stage, they had won all 24 league matches and sat 19 points ahead of second place.

For Hansi Flick's squad, the chance to defeat your greatest rivals to confirm yourselves as Spain's top side will be an opportunity too compelling to ignore. That said, Barça won't be disappointed if they've already wrapped up the title before Madrid arrive on May 10.

That scenario would, of course, call for a 'pasillo,' a guard of honor, from the visiting side. Though perhaps not. While Barcelona endured the embarrassment of applauding league champions Madrid onto the Santiago Bernabéu pitch before being thrashed 4–1 in May 2008, Los Blancos have historically been reluctant to reciprocate the gesture.

A Zinedine Zidane-managed Madrid declined to offer one at the close of the 2017–18 season, and more recently, Kylian Mbappé urged his teammates to withhold a guard of honor for Barça following their Spanish Super Cup triumph earlier this year.
