Barcelona Crumbles in Historic 4-1 Meltdown Against Sevilla as Crisis Deepens
Sevilla capped off a disastrous week for Barcelona, defeating them on home soil for the first time since 2015 with an emphatic 4–1 victory.
Looking to recover after their midweek loss to Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona delivered a woeful performance at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán and suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in 2025.
The home side appeared superior from kickoff and demonstrated their dominance by securing an early opener.
Ronald Araújo fouled Isaac Romero as both players contested for the ball within the penalty box. Initially no infringement was called, but VAR stepped in and referee Alejandro Muñíz Ruíz awarded a penalty after reviewing the incident. Alexis Sánchez converted from the spot to net against his previous team and put Sevilla ahead after 13 minutes.
Barcelona appeared completely disoriented while Sevilla created opportunities to extend their advantage. The clearest chance came when Djibril Sow set up Sánchez with only Wojciech Szczęsny to beat, but he delivered a weak effort that the Polish keeper managed to save despite the close proximity.
However, the home team maintained their control and eventually secured their second goal. Jules Koundé surrendered possession in the middle of the park and Ruben Vargas broke forward with the French defender caught out of position. Vargas maintained his composure and delivered a cross for Romero to convert Sevilla's second after 36 minutes.
Barcelona finally stirred to life in the closing five minutes of the opening period. Following a brief spell of possession, Pedri located Marcus Rashford with an excellent delivery that the English forward volleyed home to reduce the deficit to one goal before the interval.
The Catalan side began the second period dominating possession and establishing themselves in Sevilla's territory. Nevertheless, they appeared incapable of creating clear-cut chances, struggling to penetrate the hosts' compact defensive setup.
With fewer than 20 minutes remaining, Alejandro Balde earned a spot kick after being brought down by Adnan Januzaj. Robert Lewandowski had the opportunity to level the score, but his penalty attempt sailed wide, remarkably wasting a chance to draw level.
Moments afterward, it was Roony Bardghji who spurned a magnificent opportunity. The young player expertly cut inside from the flank and found himself alone against the keeper, but he produced a feeble, misdirected shot that left several Barça teammates clearly frustrated.
Hansi Flick's team persisted in seeking an equalizer, but this approach left them vulnerable at the back. Sánchez delivered an ideal through pass for José Ángel Carmona, who advanced on goal and slotted his effort into the bottom corner beyond Wojciech Szczęsny to reestablish Sevilla's two-goal cushion and crush Barça's hopes.
The embarrassment wasn't finished yet. Sevilla once more exploited Barcelona's ineffective offside trap as Chidera Ejuke provided for Akor Adams who converted a fourth goal, sending the venue into complete euphoria.
This loss represents the most severe defeat Flick has experienced as a coach in Spain and sees Barcelona fall behind Real Madrid in the La Liga table, though the fundamental problems revealed across the last two matches are even more concerning. Flick faces significant challenges in finding rapid solutions, as Barcelona currently doesn't resemble a squad capable of competing for trophies.
