Barcelona Dominate Feyenoord in Stunning Rout as Champions League Quest Kicks Off in Style

Barcelona kicked off their quest to end an 11-year Champions League title drought with a dominant 5–1 victory over Feyenoord at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Raphinha needed fewer than three minutes to open Barça's Champions League account for the season, cutting inside with a clever dummy that left two defenders sprawling before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Karim Adeyemi doubled the advantage with an equally spectacular effort, a curling long-range strike 22 minutes in to mark his European debut in Blaugrana. Hansi Flick's men put the game to bed after the interval when Pedri threaded a perfectly-weighted pass for Raphinha to complete his brace just before the hour.

With the outcome already settled, Lamine Yamal was determined to get on the scoresheet and netted the first free-kick goal of his career. Feyenoord pulled one back when Sem Steijn caught Jules Koundé off guard at the back post and tapped home for the visitors, but that goal was cancelled out three minutes later when Gabriel Jesus scored his maiden Barça goal with a delicate flicked header.

It was yet another scintillating display from Barcelona, who have begun the season playing like genuine title contenders and have put the rest of Europe on notice.

The One Thing We Can't Ignore

Barcelona's attacking firepower has dominated the headlines this season, but quietly, a much-maligned defense has been equally impressive. Flick's porous backline was regularly exposed last season and was widely considered one of the primary reasons Barça were knocked out of the Champions League.

Concerns over Barcelona's defense only grew this summer when the club chose not to bring in any defensive reinforcements beyond making João Cancelo's loan permanent. Yet the same group of players that struggled collectively in 2025–26 are now looking commanding in the early stages of the campaign.

Flick's defense has conceded just three goals across five matches in all competitions this season, and the jittery backline that appeared perpetually unsettled last year now looks composed and fully in control. Clear-cut chances were relatively straightforward to manufacture against Barcelona last term, but opponents have managed just 12 shots on target combined against Flick's defense this season. Rivals rarely get on the ball, and when they do, they struggle to penetrate dangerous areas in threatening positions.

The arrival of Rodri is undoubtedly a factor, as there is no better player on the planet at protecting the backline. But Pau Cubarsí has been outstanding, looking every bit the player who was crowned the best young performer at the World Cup. Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martín have been faultless, and the fullback options of Eric García, Xavi Espart, and Cancelo have all been very reliable so far.

Were it not for a single Koundé error late in the match, Barcelona would have ended a dreadful, record-breaking 15-game Champions League run without a clean sheet. The Catalans will be disappointed to see that tally stretch to 16, but the defensive progress is encouraging. It wouldn't be surprising if that streak is snapped sooner rather than later.

GK: Joan García—6.5: Dealt with the one shot he faced with assurance, making himself large to deny a close-range effort. Another evening with minimal work required.

RB: Jules Koundé—6.5: It was shaping up to be Koundé's finest performance in a Barcelona shirt in quite some time, until it wasn't. The Frenchman switched off momentarily and allowed Steijn to drift in behind him unchallenged to tap in Feyenoord's goal, costing his side the clean sheet. Unacceptable.

CB: Pau Cubarsí—7.3: Another highly impressive outing from Cubarsí, who is enjoying a superb start to the campaign. His timing, positioning, and open-field defending were impeccable, and he is playing with a confidence that was absent for long spells last season.

CB: Andreas Christensen—7.1: Judged perfectly when to trigger the high line on multiple occasions, cutting out dangerous attacks. Continued his strong start to the season.

LB: João Cancelo—8.7: First start of the campaign and Cancelo was everywhere on the pitch, linking up closely with Olmo in possession on several occasions away from his left-back role while also fulfilling his defensive responsibilities. Registered his first assist of the season.

DM: Rodri—7.6: His finest performance in a Barça shirt to date. The composed Spaniard was sharp in sniffing out danger and dictated play from deep, managing the tempo to better organise his teammates.

DM: Pedri—7.9: The notion that Pedri cannot thrive alongside Rodri continues to be disproven. Pedri is relishing the freedom that playing with his compatriot affords him, and his assist for Barça's third was an absolute gem.

RW: Lamine Yamal—9.5: Electrifying from the outset and after teeing up Raphinha's opener, he produced a couple of jaw-dropping dribbles that drew well-deserved applause. Capped the night with the first free-kick goal of his career.

AM: Dani Olmo—7.4: A persistent menace around the edge of the box, though he was unable to convert his opportunities. Repeatedly fouled throughout the game, and when he retaliated with a foul of his own in frustration, he was shown a yellow card.

LW: Karim Adeyemi—7.7: A stunning goal to double Barça's lead. It is clear he is still developing an understanding with several teammates, but his ability to consistently stretch the defensive line creates ample space for others to exploit.

ST: Raphinha—9.2: His instinct and eye for goal are simply on par with the finest strikers in the world. The shoulder drop that sent two defenders sliding out of his path before tucking in the opener was worth the price of admission alone. His movement for the second goal was equally brilliant.

SUB: Marc Bernal (63' for Pedri)—6.3: Did an excellent job of matching the intensity of the player he replaced, completing all 28 of his passes during his cameo.
