Barcelona Eye Blockbuster Move for USMNT's Star Striker in Stunning Transfer Pursuit

Before discussions were overtaken by his contentious red card reversal at the World Cup, U.S. men's national team forward Folarin Balogun was making waves for his knack for finding the net — a quality Barcelona appear to have taken note of.

The reigning back-to-back La Liga champions have reportedly entered the running for the Monaco striker, a move that could demand a "significant fee," according to French outlet L'Equipe. Hansi Flick's squad are urgently seeking attacking options following the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, along with failed pursuit of Julián Alvarez.

The 25-year-old won over both several elite European clubs and American fans this summer through his World Cup performances, scoring three goals in four matches and generating numerous opportunities for the Stars and Stripes on home turf.

His double in the opening match against Paraguay instantly elevated him to national recognition and established him as the squad's new figurehead, particularly given the absence of Christian Pulisic's usual heroics. The USMNT became recognized for its high-pressing, attack-minded approach — a historically uncommon trait for the American side — largely thanks to Balogun's leadership up front.

Though Balogun soon found himself caught up in a controversy not of his own creation, it was ultimately a triumphant international tournament for him, coming directly after a career-defining club season. Named Monaco's player of the year last season, Balogun registered 19 goals in 43 appearances, highlighted by a remarkable run of 10 goals in 10 matches for the French club this past spring.

Balogun remains contracted with Monaco through the summer of 2028, yet has not featured for the Ligue 1 club in the current campaign. With barely a week remaining in the summer transfer window, which shuts on Sept. 1, Barcelona are quickly running out of time to finalize a deal.

Folarin Balogun First Linked With Premier League Return

Earlier this month, reports emerged that Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur have identified Balogun as a target, with the potential transfer valued at approximately $69.3 million (£51.3 million). Aston Villa are also said to be in the mix, giving Barcelona two rivals in the pursuit of the prolific striker.

Should Balogun end up at Spurs, it would carry notable significance. The north London club are the fiercest and longest-standing rivals of Arsenal, where Balogun spent 12 formative years of his career.

The American grew up through the Gunners' academy from the age of 8, progressing all the way to the first team. Balogun received his senior call-up in 2020–21 and made six appearances across the Europa League and Carabao Cup. He made his Premier League bow the following season before heading out on two loan spells — at Middlesbrough and Reims — after struggling to cement a place at the Emirates. He completed a permanent move to Monaco ahead of the 2023–24 campaign.

Aston Villa are believed to be keeping tabs on Balogun's situation in the event that striker Ollie Watkins completes a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal this summer.
