This represents a significant setback for Barcelona's backline, as Martínez had established himself as the cornerstone of Hansi Flick's high defensive strategy and the ideal mentor for the promising young talent Pau Cubarsí.
The summer strategy involved releasing a center-back due to the abundance of options at the position. However, Martínez's departure from Barcelona wasn't anticipated as part of this approach. Now, despite having numerous alternatives, Barcelona's defense might regress next season.
Barcelona's financial constraints make acquiring a world-class replacement appear almost unattainable. Nevertheless, unexpected developments have occurred previously. If there's even a minimal opportunity, Barcelona should contemplate pursuing a center-back held in even higher esteem than Martínez: Inter Milan's Alessandro Bastoni.
