Barcelona kick off their Champions League campaign against Feyenoord at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Hansi Flick's side have been in brilliant domestic form to start the 2026–27 season, thrashing Valencia 5–0 at the weekend, and will look to carry that momentum into the Champions League as they chase their first European title since 2015.

Following back-to-back exits at the semi-final and quarter-final stages over the last two seasons, the pressure is mounting on the manager to finally go all the way. First, however, comes the challenge of progressing through the league phase.

One man who knows exactly what it takes to lift the Champions League with Barcelona is Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The current Feyenoord boss was a member of the 2005–06 winning squad and can expect a warm welcome when he makes his return to Catalonia.

With Real Madrid opening their Champions League campaign against Inter, this looks like a relatively gentle European opener for Barça—though they hardly need the favour.

Flick's attack has been in devastating form this season, making the club's prolonged summer pursuit of Julián Alvarez look entirely unnecessary. Driven by Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and company, the reigning La Liga champions have been scoring freely despite the absence of a dedicated centre-forward.

Feyenoord have also started their domestic season without a defeat under Van Bronckhorst, who returned to his hometown club for a second stint in charge during the summer.

That said, the late departure of Ayase Ueda in the transfer window was a significant setback, and facing Barcelona at Camp Nou is an entirely different proposition to anything they have encountered so far.

Bart Nieuwkoop, Jakub Moder and Gija Smal are also missing for the travelling side.

Meanwhile, last season's Eredivisie top scorer Ueda completed a Deadline Day move to Lille, leaving a glaring gap in Feyenoord's attack. Valencia-born 21-year-old Nacho Ferri is expected to lead the line on Wednesday.
