Barcelona Face Major Setback as Nico Williams Transfer Dreams Take Hit

Bayern Munich continues to pursue Nico Williams for a summer transfer, despite reports that the Spanish winger has already reached a personal agreement with Barcelona.

Williams chose to remain at Athletic Club last summer after his standout performances at Euro 2024, but now appears prepared to make his next career move.

His potential Barcelona contract would extend through 2031 with a net yearly wage reaching €8 million ($9.2 million). However, no deal with Athletic Club has been finalized—while a €62m ($71.1 million) release clause exists, it demands full upfront payment, and Barcelona's ongoing financial constraints make them prefer installment arrangements.

Until the transfer is completely settled, opportunities remain for competing clubs.

Florian Plettenberg from Sky Sport Germany reports that Bayern has submitted a fresh proposal to Williams offering 50% more than his Barcelona agreement.

Bayern's offer includes a €12 million ($13.8 million) net annual salary. However, no ongoing discussions exist between Williams and the German champions, who are banking on Barcelona's inability to secure the necessary funding. This strategy may prove more effective than attempting to convince the 22-year-old to choose their superior offer over Barcelona's.

Bayern requires wing reinforcement this summer following Leroy Sané's contract expiration and subsequent move to Galatasaray. Kingsley Coman is also anticipated to depart.

Barcelona pursued Williams last summer but lacked sufficient funds to acquire both him and Dani Olmo simultaneously—the club subsequently faced significant embarrassment when Olmo's La Liga registration lapsed in December and re-registration attempts were initially rejected.
