Barcelona Face Real Madrid: Both Teams Reveal Their Battle Plans for the Season's First Explosive Clasico

Barcelona and Real Madrid have both revealed their starting elevens for Sunday's highly anticipated El Clásico at the Camp Nou.

The home side are aiming for an impressive seven victories in their last eight encounters against Los Blancos. Hansi Flick's squad will also be eager to recover after a painful 4–2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

Several of the same players who started the Champions League loss feature again in Barcelona's weekend XI. Flick's defensive line remains the same, with João Cancelo and Xavi Espart covering the flanks while Jules Koundé and Eric García continue to sit out through injury.

Lamine Yamal and Raphinha predictably lead the front line once more, with Anthony Gordon returning to the left wing. Fermín Lopez earns the starting spot in the No. 10 role, stepping in for the injured Dani Olmo.

Rodri is also restored to the starting lineup, forming a midfield partnership with Pedri after being limited to just 30 minutes against PSG.

Jose Mourinho Rolls the Dice

The pressure surrounding Sunday's fixture is immeasurably greater for Real Madrid. The 15-time European champions already find themselves six points behind Barcelona, and a loss in Catalonia would be devastating for their La Liga title ambitions.

Adding further tension to an already critical match are the absences of Vinícius Júnior and Thibaut Courtois. The Brazilian is serving a suspension, while the goalkeeper is ruled out due to illness.

Yan Diomande and Andriy Lunin were straightforward replacements for the two missing players; however, José Mourinho faced far more difficult choices when selecting his midfield.

The Portuguese manager ultimately settled on a double pivot featuring Aurélien Tchouaméni and Bernardo Silva — a surprising decision given that Silva has made just four starts this season, and the 32-year-old now finds himself thrust into a Clásico.

Mourinho's options for Tchouaméni's midfield partner were admittedly slim; Federico Valverde has been deployed at right back, and Arda Güler takes the right wing spot. The Uruguayan's positioning keeps Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold among the substitutes.
