Barcelona Goalkeeper Faces Shocking Exit After Stunning Contract Reversal

Barcelona are said to be ready to offer Iñaki Peña a contract extension, safeguarding the club against losing the goalkeeper on a free transfer.

Peña finds himself outside of Hansi Flick's squad plans for this campaign, as Joan García has been brought in as the primary goalkeeper while Wojciech Szczęsny serves as second choice once the Polish player completes his registration. Peña's departure is crucial for Szczęsny's registration due to the squad space that would become available when the La Masia product moves on.

Barcelona recently decided against canceling Peña's existing deal to allow for an immediate exit, which had been the approach taken with Iñigo Martínez.

The strategy has now emerged, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that following discussions between Peña's representative and sporting director Deco, Barcelona have chosen to propose a one-year extension plus a season-long loan arrangement—rather than cutting all connections.

Peña's existing deal expires in June 2026, but the proposed terms would extend until summer 2027.

This arrangement means that following a 2025–26 loan spell elsewhere, Barcelona could potentially generate revenue through a transfer fee next summer. Alternatively, based on the goalkeeping circumstances at Camp Nou, he might return to rejoin the Catalan club.

Currently, no clear loan destination has emerged for Peña. Como, Celta Vigo, Galatasaray and Girona have all expressed interest, though none can immediately secure the 26-year-old's signature, whether due to squad limitations or the need for departures to meet financial requirements.

For now, while Szczęsny awaits registration, Peña will occupy a substitute role for Barcelona's upcoming La Liga fixture—a trip along the eastern coastline to face Levante on Saturday.
