Barcelona's search for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski brought them to Chelsea forward João Pedro, but the London club reportedly has "every intention" of retaining the Brazilian at Stamford Bridge for the foreseeable future.
The Catalan club gave Lewandowski an emotional send-off on the final day of the season, honoring the Polish striker who netted 120 goals across four campaigns at the club. Barcelona chose not to extend the 37-year-old's contract and is now scouting the market for a younger center-forward to anchor their attack for the coming years.
Pedro was among the names linked to the reigning Spanish champions, and a recent visit to England by Barcelona sporting director Deco only intensified the rumors. However, the trip appeared to yield little progress.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea's position remains unchanged: The Blues "want to keep" Pedro. The club considers the 24-year-old an "important part of the project" and "have every intention" of holding onto him.
Barcelona may press on with their interest, but landing his signature will prove "difficult" for the Spanish club.
Why Chelsea Must Hold onto Pedro

A potential move to Barcelona would undoubtedly be tempting for Pedro. The Catalan giants have claimed five trophies over the past two years, most notably back-to-back La Liga championships.
Hansi Flick's squad is also brimming with youthful talent, including teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. Any striker would relish the chance to play alongside the winger, particularly with a starting berth virtually guaranteed following Lewandowski's exit.
Compared to the chaos that engulfed Stamford Bridge this season, Catalonia looks like an ideal destination on paper. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League, missed out on European football entirely, and appointed their third permanent manager in a year in Xabi Alonso, all amid growing supporter frustration toward BlueCo.
Yet Pedro stood out as one of the few positives in 2025–26. The Brazilian led the squad with 20 goals across all competitions and claimed the Chelsea Player of the Season award. The Blues simply cannot afford to part ways with a striker who is barely beginning to tap into his full potential. One can only imagine what he could produce with a stronger squad around him.
Potential Pedro Alternatives for Barcelona

With Pedro seemingly out of reach, Barcelona must now turn their attention to other targets. The simplest—and most cost-effective—solution would be handing the attacking reins to Ferran Torres. The Spaniard posted a career-best 21 goals this season and performed well enough to claim Lewandowski's starting spot for much of the campaign.
However, Torres also endured stretches of inconsistency that cast doubt on whether he is the right long-term option to lead the line, particularly given Barcelona's ambition to win the Champions League, a trophy that has eluded them since 2015.
It goes without saying that Atlético Madrid's Julián Alvarez remains the standout transfer target, but his asking price—believed to exceed €110 million ($116.5 million)—poses a significant obstacle for a club still navigating financial constraints.
Manchester City's Omar Marmoush represents a more realistic alternative. The Egyptian's stint at the Etihad has not gone as hoped, and with Pep Guardiola now departed, he may be seeking a fresh start somewhere that can guarantee him regular playing time—something he will never have at City while Erling Haaland remains.
Yet the search could be resolved before the summer window even gets underway. Recent reports suggest Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon is the leading candidate for a high-profile move to Barcelona, where he would either push Raphinha into a more central role while starting on the left wing, or continue his gradual shift toward a striker's position.
