Xavi has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, signing a deal that runs through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Having been without a club since his time at Barcelona concluded in 2024, the 46-year-old former midfielder turned coach succeeds Ronald Koeman, who resigned after the Netherlands were knocked out in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup this summer. In a curious twist, Xavi had also replaced Koeman when he was appointed at Barcelona back in November 2021.

Xavi is looking for a fresh chapter after publicly acknowledging that a failure to uphold "high standards" during his final season at the helm of Barça was the key reason behind his departure.
The Barcelona icon had guided his former club to remarkable success in his first complete season in charge in 2022–23, claiming both the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga title; however, things unravelled dramatically the following campaign, leaving Xavi searching for a new role ever since.
The Netherlands find themselves in a comparable situation, which may make Xavi the ideal candidate to lead them forward. Ranked among the top 10 in the world and widely regarded as one of the most threatening dark horses, the Dutch were anticipated to go far at this summer's World Cup; instead, Koeman's side fell at the first hurdle in the knockout rounds, continuing their frustrating tradition of falling just short of expectations.
Much like Xavi, the Oranje are in need of a renewed sense of direction.

"It is an immense honour for me to take on the role of head coach of the Dutch national team," Xavi said in an official statement. "Having come through the Barcelona academy with strong influences from the likes of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a deep and personal connection to Dutch football.
"In many ways, I consider myself a product of Dutch football. Other outstanding coaches, particularly Louis van Gaal, under whom I made my Barcelona debut, and Frank Rijkaard, were also hugely influential in shaping me both as a player and as a coach.
"The Netherlands boasts a rich footballing culture and a clear philosophy that resonates deeply with me: attacking, possession-based football built on creativity, passion, and conviction.
"Naturally, the ultimate objective is and always will be to win, but I want to do so in a style that embodies those values and that fans can truly enjoy. The talent is there, and there is a strong foundation to build on. I'm excited to begin this journey alongside the players, the staff, and everyone at the KNVB."
Xavi Joins a Growing Wave of High-Profile Managers
A notable trend is emerging in international football, and Xavi's appointment is the latest example of it.
Rather than following the traditional model of hiring homegrown coaches with deep ties to their respective federations, top national teams are increasingly turning to high-profile foreign managers with elite club pedigrees.
Brazil has five-time Champions League winner Carlo Ancelotti — the Italian who managed AC Milan and Real Madrid — leading the charge, while England has turned to German tactician Thomas Tuchel, who claimed the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea in 2020–21 and guided Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in 2022–23.
The U.S. men's national team recently extended the contract of Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has previously managed Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.
This emerging trend shows no signs of slowing down and will undoubtedly bring even more marquee names to the international stage ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
