Barcelona Must Seal These Three Crucial Deals Following Anthony Gordon Pursuit

All that remains is an official announcement before England international Anthony Gordon is confirmed as Barcelona's first acquisition of the summer transfer window, though there is still considerable work ahead.

Barcelona moved swiftly and agreed a deal with Newcastle United valued at €80 million (£69.3 million, $93.2 million) plus potential add-ons to secure Gordon. The 25-year-old has already been seen in Barcelona, and only a standard medical stands between him and officially completing his move to Catalonia.

The transfer will make Gordon the most costly signing Barcelona have made during the Hansi Flick era, sending a clear message that the club intends to operate without financial restraint throughout the summer window.

The Catalan club repeatedly insisted they expected to comply with La Liga's financial fair play requirements by the time summer arrived. That claim has been made in previous windows too, but it finally appears there is genuine reason to believe Barcelona can pull off major signings, with Gordon's move far from the only one being pursued.

With the Gordon deal wrapped up, what comes next for Barcelona?

Complete Julian Alvarez Transfer

Julián Alvarez

Barcelona's next objective is even more ambitious: luring star striker Julián Alvarez away from Atlético Madrid.

The Argentine has been Barcelona's primary target to succeed Robert Lewandowski for nearly a year, and his arrival has never appeared more imminent. The Catalans are preparing a €100 million ($116 million) bid, though reports indicate Atlético are demanding more before agreeing to part with Alvarez.

Negotiations are set to continue in the days ahead, and further reports suggest Alvarez is strongly attracted to the prospect of joining Barça. The 26-year-old's exit from Atléti this summer looks increasingly probable, with Barcelona as his top choice despite interest from other highly attractive suitors.

Barcelona have made landing a world-class striker their top priority ahead of the 2026–27 season, and Alvarez more than fits the bill. He is an ideal match for Flick's system, and it is hard to imagine Barça finding a better replacement for the departing Lewandowski.

Should Barcelona fail to satisfy Atléti's asking price or Los Rojiblancos simply refuse to negotiate, pivoting to another top-tier striker to fill the void left by the Polish forward becomes essential. The Catalans cannot enter 2026–27 without resolving the striker situation.

Bernardo Silva and Other Market Opportunities

Bernardo Silva roaring with delight.

Once the Alvarez deal is finalised—or a deal for another elite striker—Barcelona can feel more than pleased with their summer business. The ideal bonus would be capitalising on opportunities that may arise in the free agent market, and there are some compelling names worth exploring.

Bernardo Silva is seeking a new club after departing Manchester City. Barcelona showed interest in the Portuguese midfielder not long ago, and it appears that interest could be reignited. Talks with the player have reportedly already taken place, and a transfer is a genuine possibility.

On the face of it, Silva's arrival is not strictly necessary given the quality of midfielders already at the club. However, the versatile Portuguese would bring both experience and squad depth — something Barça lacked during the closing stages of 2025–26, when injuries forced Flick to overburden his players, particularly Pedri, who was well below his best when Barça needed him most.

Silva has attracted interest from other clubs, but Barcelona have emerged as his preferred destination as he is keen to remain competing at the highest level in Europe. His adaptability could be put to excellent use by Flick.

Another option worth monitoring is Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, who will become a free agent in the coming weeks. Barcelona could certainly benefit from a quality defensive reinforcement, and recent reports suggest the Frenchman is set to leave Anfield after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension.

Work On Departures

Ronald Araújo

Gordon's transfer combined with Alvarez's potential arrival would see Barcelona spend in excess of $200 million. That represents a substantial outlay for any club, let alone one that has faced significant financial difficulties in recent years. If Barcelona wish to steer clear of further financial fair play complications, they must also facilitate player sales.

Trimming the squad's wage bill is of particular urgency. Marc-André ter Stegen and Ansu Fati are among the club's top earners and both will be returning from loan spells. Monaco are interested in making Fati's move permanent, but finding a new destination for the German goalkeeper is critically important. Offloading those two wages would provide much-needed financial breathing room.

Tough calls must also be made regarding other members of the squad. Ronald Araújo, Jules Koundé, Marc Casadó and even Alejandro Balde have all been linked with departures, particularly the first three. If convincing offers materialise, it may well be in Barça's best interests to sanction at least some of those exits.

Moving on players who appear to have slipped down Flick's pecking order and shedding wage commitments would greatly improve Barça's prospects of satisfying financial fair play requirements and potentially free up funds for further reinforcements. Centre-back is a position the club have chosen not to invest heavily in, yet it is one that could clearly benefit from an upgrade.

All in all, Barcelona have kicked off the offseason with eye-catching transfer activity and are expected to remain busy in the weeks and months ahead as they look to maximise their chances of achieving even greater success in 2026–27.
