Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Rayo Vallecano: Surprise Hero Delivers Game-Changing Performance

Barcelona struggled to secure a narrow 1–0 win against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday evening, extending their advantage to seven points ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga's standings.

Hansi Flick's squad began promisingly and appeared destined for an easy triumph when Ronald Araujo climbed above defenders from a corner kick to nod Barcelona ahead before halftime.

Nevertheless, Rayo, who advanced to the Conference League quarterfinals on Thursday, emerged stronger following the interval and were only denied points by an exceptional Joan García display in Catalonia.

Barcelona performed poorly throughout much of the second period, surrendering possession, and Flick, despite his team's increased cushion at the top before the Madrid Derby, will surely criticize his squad's performance.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Hansi Flick

Whenever Barcelona struggles under Flick, exhaustion is typically cited as the primary factor. In such an intense and physically demanding approach, there's minimal margin for defensive mistakes. When Barcelona players are fatigued, opponents easily exploit their high defensive line.

This remained problematic on Sunday following a decent opening, and one questions whether Flick's choice to field his strongest lineup might eventually harm the Blaugrana later. They're not only pursuing the La Liga championship this campaign, but also their first Champions League trophy since 2015.

Flick made just one alteration to his starting eleven from Wednesday's dominant performance against Newcastle United, and the sole newcomer, goalscorer Araujo, featured for over sixty minutes midweek. Essentially, the team remained unchanged.

This lineup, considering the absent players, must be viewed by the coach as his optimal selection, with the rotation decision potentially influenced by the gap Barcelona could establish at the top. Rather than resting several important players with post-international break fixtures in mind, Flick focused solely on immediate concerns, which is reasonable, though the absence of rotation posed risks.

A weary Blaugrana barely escaped with victory here.

Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Rayo Vallecano (4-2-3-1)

Ronald Araújo

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Joan García—8.8: Escaping serious injury on Wednesday, García retained his starting position and guaranteed Barcelona secured maximum points through several brilliant saves.

RB: Ronald Araújo—8.4: Araujo has clearly returned more resilient since his mental health hiatus in January. He's displaying some of his finest football in considerable time, and the skipper emerged as Sunday's decisive figure.

CB: Pau Cubarsí—7.0: There was one notably excellent sliding challenge in the first half that energized Camp Nou, but Cubarsi was otherwise fairly unremarkable. Also picked up a yellow card.

CB: Gerard Martín—7.5: Martín shows more willingness than his defensive colleagues to retreat, and problems occur when he drops too quickly. Nevertheless, the left-footed center-back was composed mostly, occasionally advancing with possession as well.

LB: João Cancelo—8.6: Barcelona are managing without Alejandro Balde thanks to Cancelo, who continues being an exceptional technician. The adaptable fullback assisted Araujo's goal with a dangerous curling corner toward the far post.

DM: Pedri—8.6: Rayo's defensive intelligence meant he couldn't dominate completely, but Pedri remained Barcelona's primary outlet for progression. Some of his work under pressure was absolutely magnificent.

DM: Marc Bernal—7.4: Similar to Pedri, Bernal encountered difficulties against this Rayo side, and couldn't influence play in the attacking third as he's frequently managed recently.

RW: Lamine Yamal—7.4: A more subdued performance from Yamal, though we still witnessed several moments of captivating flank play. The exceptional young Spanish talent was perhaps lucky to avoid multiple cautions.

AM: Fermín López—7.0: Prior to the predictable substitution with Dani Olmo, López shone intermittently and executed a delightful turn in the opening half to bypass Pathé Ciss that would surely have been criticized by supposed pivot-turn critic Pep Guardiola.

LW: Raphinha—7.1: Surprising that he failed to score, considering his current form. Raphinha definitely should have capitalized on a clear scoring opportunity early on, a chance he created through defensive pressing.

ST: Robert Lewandowski—6.1: The experienced forward is finding it difficult to contribute meaningfully to this Barcelona team when not scoring, and he barely threatened Rayo's goal before his halftime substitution.

SUB: Ferran Torres (46' for Lewandowski)—6.3: Showed plenty of energy without achieving much substance. His difficulties persist.

SUB: Dani Olmo (61' for López)—6.3: Extremely wasteful despite frequently finding space. An disappointing substitute appearance overall.

SUB: Marc Casadó (61' for Bernal)—6.4: Reliable enough, though he appears a noticeable step down from Bernal.

SUB: Marcus Rashford (83' for Yamal)—N/A

SUB: Xavi Espart (90' for Cancelo)—N/A

Subs not used: Diego Kochen (GK), Wojciech Szczęsny (GK), Álvaro Cortés, Gavi, Tommy Marqués, Roony Bardghji, Eric García.
