Barcelona President Drops Major Hint About Ballon d'Or Star Lamine Yamal's Comeback from Injury
Barcelona chief Joan Laporta hinted at Lamine Yamal's upcoming comeback after missing three consecutive matches due to a groin problem.
Yamal has been sidelined throughout September, missing victories against Valencia, Newcastle United and Getafe, with his last appearance coming in August during Hansi Flick's side's disappointing draw with Rayo Vallecano.
Following that match, the coach criticized player "egos" that "destroy success," calling for improved collective spirit among his squad. Yamal downplayed the significance of these remarks.
The 18-year-old attended Monday evening's 2025 Ballon d'Or gala in Paris, accompanied by his family. Spanish media reported his father had reportedly reserved a celebration venue in advance, though ultimately Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembélé claimed the award.
Laporta was also in attendance in Paris, where Barcelona had several players shortlisted across various categories—Aitana Bonmatí secured her third consecutive Ballon d'Or Féminin title.
The president addressed media on various topics, including Yamal's status, indicating supporters might witness his return on Sunday, Sept. 28.
"He mentioned he could be ready for Real Sociedad," Laporta disclosed, which would apparently exclude the player from Thursday evening's clash with Real Oviedo.
With Yamal still unavailable short-term, questions remain whether Flick will restore Marcus Rashford—previously benched for tardiness before the Getafe game—or persist with Ferran Torres. Torres netted twice in the opening period, while Rashford entered as a substitute.
Yamal 'Driven' to Claim 2026 Ballon d'Or

Before this week's fixture, and following the Ballon d'Or ceremony, Flick showed optimism that Yamal has processed his second-place finish constructively.
"It serves as inspiration for future years, and Lamine views it positively. He will definitely have opportunities to claim the Ballon d'Or," Flick stated.
Yamal lost his chance to become the youngest Ballon d'Or recipient this year, but that milestone remains achievable. Ronaldo Nazário currently holds the record at 21 years, three months and five days, with the 2026, 2027 and 2028 ceremonies occurring before Yamal reaches that milestone.
The youngster still created history, becoming the inaugural player to claim the Kopa Trophy twice, earning the accolade for the world's top talent under 21, having previously triumphed in 2024.
