Barcelona President Fires Back at Athletic Club Over Nico Williams 'Threat' Drama

Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, has strongly criticized Athletic Club following reports that the Basque team might attempt to obstruct their efforts to sign Nico Williams.
Barcelona and Williams have reportedly reached an understanding regarding personal contract terms, with the Spanish winger said to have requested Athletic to consider flexibility regarding his release clause payment, which totals approximately €62 million ($72.2 million) including all associated fees.
Athletic has responded negatively to this request. Cadena SER initially reported that the club's leadership was preparing to file an official complaint with La Liga, claiming Barcelona doesn't comply with the 1:1 financial regulations and therefore lacks the monetary resources to complete such a transfer.
When questioned about Athletic's potential actions, Laporta expressed his frustration without reservation.
"Our relationship with Athletic isn't hostile," he stated. "While there have been some misunderstandings and issues over recent years, we cannot claim to have poor relations. We are two historically significant clubs with longstanding connections.

"I find their reactions puzzling, with all respect intended. Each club should focus on their own affairs. I cannot comprehend why they would discuss Barcelona's matters with La Liga - it seems inappropriate, though they must have their reasons."
Laporta further indicated that Barcelona is not actually subject to La Liga's 1:1 spending restrictions but confirmed they are working toward meeting those standards.
"We are making progress toward achieving the 1:1 regulation compliance, having already met it during the winter transfer window," he explained. "All necessary measures have been implemented to enable normal signings without financial fair play intervention, as was the case until winter. We must meet specific criteria, which we are doing, and based on that, we will be able to sign and register the two players we wish to acquire... or register."
According to SPORT, Athletic's management has clearly stated they will not assist in facilitating Williams's departure. Any suggestions of a verbal agreement between the clubs, supposedly established when Williams chose to remain last summer, have been categorically rejected.
Athletic's irritation stems primarily from Barcelona's openly public pursuit of Williams. The club's staff and players have consistently expressed their appreciation for the 22-year-old, leaving Athletic considerably displeased.
