Barcelona President Stands Firm: 'Our Offer For Julian Alvarez Remains On The Table'

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has acknowledged that his club has submitted an offer for Julián Alvarez, dismissing Atlético Madrid's outrage over the transfer dispute while asserting that his rivals are being "inflexible."

The defending La Liga champions identified Alvarez as their top transfer priority this summer as they search for a successor to the outgoing Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona's pursuit drew a sharp reaction from Atlético back in May, with the Madrid club posting a string of satirical social media bids for Barça players, including offers of Bad Bunny concert tickets, a yearly subscription to news outlet ABC, and a bag of sunflower seeds in exchange for Lamine Yamal. Separately, a provocative €150 million ($175 million) bid for Alvarez from Real Madrid was also promptly turned down by Atlético.

Atlético's public outrage has failed to put the matter to rest, with Alvarez openly expressing his wish to leave the club. Speaking candidly after Argentina's victory over Austria at the World Cup, the striker delivered an unexpected statement: "The best outcome for everyone is a transfer. I want to make my dream a reality.

"This isn't the right moment to discuss it, but I can't stay silent either," he continued. "I try to be straightforward. I've spoken with people at Atlético Madrid, and I believe a transfer is the right move for all parties."

ESPN reports that Atlético are "furious" and hold Barcelona "responsible" for Alvarez going public, and the club has since lodged formal complaints with FIFA and the Spanish football federation regarding Barça's behavior.

Laporta Confirms Barcelona's Offer

Joan Laporta

The Barcelona president has not been deterred by Atlético's response. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Laporta confirmed the offer to journalists and stressed that he remains committed to completing a deal.

"Let me be clear from the start — we continue to hold Atlético in high regard," Laporta said, via MARCA. "The tweets came before Julián said he wants to play for a top club. He didn't name Barça specifically. Some people interpreted it that way, others didn't. We didn't push this. It came from the player himself.

"We submitted an offer, club to club. We understand they're not selling because they lack alternatives. When they find alternatives, if they choose to, and this offer still stands, we're keen on completing the transfer."

Regarding Atlético's decision to report Barcelona for approaching their player, Laporta said: "I don't understand the reasoning here. All of Atlético's representatives are highly experienced, and I'm not sure what their strategy is. They have our offer. If they wish to accept, we'd be very happy.

"Atlético is being entirely inflexible, and I hope they'll reconsider and accept. If they won't, they should say so, and we'll take it from there. But escalating it to UEFA, FIFA ... I'm not sure what the purpose is. Perhaps some people are trying to stir the pot. It doesn't add up."

He continued: "I've been in contact with Atlético and made our intentions clear. [Barça sporting director] Deco submitted an offer. We know the player wants to join Barça, and has for quite some time. We made this proposal with full respect for the Madrid club. We'll keep this offer on the table for as long as we see fit. We won't be held hostage by their timeline. If they want to proceed, we'd be thrilled. But the offer won't stay open indefinitely."

What Happens Next for Alvarez?

Julián Álvarez

ESPN reports that Barcelona's bid exceeds €100 million ($114m), and Alvarez's preference is to join the La Liga champions ahead of other interested clubs such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal.

Current Barcelona players including Fermín López, Gavi, and even Yamal have stoked the flames by 'liking' social media posts covering the latest developments and making comments to the press while on World Cup duty.

Atlético, however, have been unambiguous in their refusal to sell, pointing to the player's staggering €500 million ($569 million) contractual release clause — a figure more than double the current world-record transfer fee.

With neither party willing to budge, this saga looks set to drag on, potentially right up until the transfer window closes on September 1. Ultimately, no matter how hard Atleti resist, forcing a player to remain against his will rarely ends well for anyone involved.
