Barcelona President Unleashes Fury Over Real Madrid's 'Dirty Tricks'

Barcelona's president Joan Laporta adopted a defiant and victorious stance after Real Madrid's petition to examine evidence in the continuing Negreira affair was rejected this week, celebrating the collapse of these "underhanded maneuvers."

Madrid and their leader Florentino Pérez have shown significant interest in the probe concerning payments Barcelona purportedly made to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former deputy head of the Spanish FA's referee technical committee, since the story broke in 2023.

Pérez has openly criticized what he perceives as obvious corruption, and Madrid attempted to insert themselves into the investigation by requesting access to compliance reports, financial audits and comprehensive reviews of Barcelona's economic operations. Judge Alejandra Gil Lima rejected this proposed disclosure on Friday, greatly pleasing Laporta.

The Negreira affair, known as El Caso Negreira in Spain, centers on a sequence of payments totaling €8.4 million ($10 million at current exchange rates) made from 2001–18 to entities linked to the previously mentioned José María Enríquez Negreira.

Barcelona has consistently argued that they were merely obtaining "technical reports concerning professional officiating" which is allegedly a "standard practice among professional football clubs." The Catalan club has always maintained that they "never purchased any referee nor attempted to influence any official's judgments."

Real Madrid predictably remains unconvinced by these justifications. Pérez has been advocating claims of corruption since these irregular (and secretive) payments were initially revealed through a tax audit. "The circumstances are extremely grave following what occurred in the Negreira Case for nearly two decades. It clearly demonstrates the necessity for fundamental reform in Spanish refereeing structures," Real Madrid's president stated in December.

The timeframe of the Negreira payments aligned with an exceptionally successful period for Barcelona. From 2001 to 2018, the club secured nine league championships, four Champions League titles and three Club World Cup victories. Laporta has consistently argued that Barcelona's competitors are exploiting this to discredit those accomplishments.

"FC Barcelona has never engaged in any conduct intended to manipulate competition for sporting benefit," Laporta allegedly informed the court during his December testimony. "It's evident that this represents a coordinated effort to damage a magnificent period in our club's history."

Speaking immediately after Real Madrid's petition to examine case evidence was promptly dismissed, Laporta alleged that the capital club was exploiting this as an indirect method to gain access to Barcelona's financial operations.

"Real Madrid is participating in a manner I consider inappropriate because they are also utilizing this process to attempt acquiring information from Barça concerning confidential matters, the club's strategy and principles, and operational methods," he asserted.

"Their petition was inappropriate, and the judge has decided accordingly.

"Additionally, they are involved in this proceeding to attempt sustaining an argument they know is entirely false, lacking any foundation, and they are doing this to perpetuate the story they broadcast on their television network, despite knowing perfectly well this is untrue.

"I anticipate the proceedings will be dismissed promptly because there will be nothing to support what the complainant seeks to establish, and Barça will never have engaged in anything involving competition manipulation by seeking favoritism or officiating benefits.

"That's the reality, and I'm pleased the judge shut the door on Madrid and informed them this isn't the mechanism for collecting information about Barça and studying their competitors. It's about striving to surpass us. That's our approach: excelling through work, effort, proper conduct, not constantly employing underhanded methods and seeking unfair advantages."
