Barcelona Presidential Hopeful Dismisses Julian Alvarez Pursuit, Confirms Secret Talks With Mystery Striker

Barcelona presidential hopeful Xavier Vilajoana states he has initiated discussions with Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane regarding a potential transfer to Camp Nou, arguing the English striker would be superior to Atlético Madrid's Julián Alvarez for the club's needs.

Following a straightforward social media post hinting at Kane's recruitment, Vilajoana escalated the speculation during an ESPN interview, suggesting the English star's acquisition could be realistic for Barcelona should he win the presidency next month.

"Our primary need is a striker," he stated. "A central forward capable of connecting play while also being lethal in the penalty area.

"We have established preliminary contact, and I believe he represents an excellent match, subject to his contract circumstances: Harry Kane.

"Kane is a central striker who would integrate seamlessly with our playing philosophy. He's a forward who can retreat to connect with teammates. He also excels as a traditional No. 9, a clinical finisher.

"He brings dynamic movement to the team. He also thrives against defensive setups. He would significantly enhance Barcelona's attacking play."

With Barcelona planning for veteran forward Robert Lewandowski's future exit, Alvarez has frequently emerged as a potential acquisition, though Vilajoana suggests the club should explore alternative options.

"He's an excellent player who could adapt tactically," Vilajoana acknowledged. "However, other compelling alternatives exist. Currently, I wouldn't invest €70 million in the Argentine.

Rather, Vilajoana reinforced his Kane preference, arguing the Englishman possesses attributes seldom developed within Barcelona's youth system.

"I highlight Harry Kane as an illustration because his characteristics aren't easily cultivated at La Masia," he informed Football Espana. "He's an exceptional goalscorer with tremendous ability, excellent at linking play, dropping deep, and operating in confined spaces.

"He possesses numerous qualities that enhance Barcelona's tactical approach. He exemplifies a player who could succeed here."

Regrettably for Vilajoana, the opportunity for a straightforward Kane acquisition this summer has passed. The prolific forward's Bayern contract contains multiple release clauses that activate only at season's end if Kane personally notifies Bayern of his transfer intentions by January of that campaign year.

The activation period for this year's release clause has definitively concluded. "I want to clarify this point," club executive Uli Hoeneß told BILD.

"Harry represents tremendous fortune for us. Since his release clause for summer 2026 has expired and his deal extends through summer 2027, we face no immediate pressure."

Kane's expired release clause doesn't eliminate a summer departure from Bayern, but it substantially complicates any proposed move as Barcelona, or other interested parties, must persuade Bayern to negotiate a sale.

Considering Kane reaches 33 this year, Bayern would certainly have a selling price, similar to their previous Lewandowski situation, though that figure would likely be astronomically high. He has netted 41 goals across all competitions this season and boasts 126 goals in merely 131 total appearances.

While Barcelona's financial situation improves, investing heavily in a player approaching career's end may prove unfeasible for the Catalan club.
