Barcelona Races Against Time to Lock Down Key Player Before Transfer Deadline

Barcelona's summer contract extension spree continues as the club aims to secure important members of Hansi Flick's squad for the long haul.
Up next on the agenda is multi-position defender Eric García. Following the completion of Jules Koundé's contract extension earlier this week, securing his understudy from the 2024–25 campaign is the next priority and could be wrapped up before the summer transfer window closes.
Per SPORT, both Barcelona and García are confident and prepared to complete a fresh agreement that would keep the Catalonia-born player at the club through 2030. García's existing deal runs out at the conclusion of this season.
Discussions about García's extension have been ongoing since the latter part of last season. Flick highly regards the former Manchester City academy product due to his adaptability. Throughout the German manager's inaugural campaign, García operated as a center back, right back and central midfielder.
Following a productive loan period at Girona during the 2023–24 campaign, many expected García would continue his time with the red and white Catalan side, but Flick chose to retain him for his first season. Currently, he's become a consistent presence for the Blaugranas.
García is naturally a center back, but he's primarily deployed as a right back under Flick. In Barcelona's 2025–26 season opener, García was given the starting nod over Koundé on the right flank of the defense.
The expectation is that García's extension will be finalized next week. He would become part of the group including Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Wojciech Szczęsny and Koundé as Barcelona players who have renewed their deals this summer, with Frenkie de Jong apparently next in line.
