Barcelona Sabotage Their Own Comeback Against Atlético Madrid: Who Stood Tall and Who Crumbled?

Barcelona claimed a 2–1 win over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday evening in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg, but ultimately it wasn't enough to advance to the last four.

The Spanish side entered the tie trailing 2–0 after playing the opening leg at Camp Nou with 10 men throughout the entire second half. They made a flying start at the Metropolitano, however, when Lamine Yamal found the net inside four minutes.

Ferran Torres then made it two shortly after, igniting hopes of a remarkable turnaround for the reigning Spanish champions. However, Atlético Madrid hit back when Ademola Lookman exploited the visitors on the break in the 31st minute.

Now down 3–2 on aggregate, Barcelona required another goal to stay in contention and push the tie to extra time, but they were unable to break through Diego Simeone's resolute defense—particularly after being reduced to 10 men once more, following an Eric García red card.

Ultimately, Hansi Flick's side were knocked out of Europe's top club competition, stretching Barcelona's absence from the Champions League final to 11 years.

Heroes and Villains

Heroes

Lamine Yamal

Prior to this weekend, Ferran Torres had gone 13 consecutive matches without scoring. But the Spaniard then netted twice against Espanyol on Saturday before adding a goal and an assist against Atlético Madrid on Tuesday. He even had a second strike ruled out for offside in what was a commendable display in Barcelona's most crucial match of the campaign. Flick could hardly have asked for more from his lead striker.

Lamine Yamal had been unable to get on the scoresheet against Atlético Madrid in the sides' previous five encounters this season, but he saved his best for the most critical occasion. The young star broke the deadlock just four minutes into the second leg and kept going from there. He glided past multiple defenders shadowing his every step as if it were effortless, manufacturing chance after chance that his teammates were unable to convert.

Villains

Eric García

Eric García will be haunted by his Tuesday night performance for some time. Not only did Marcos Llorente tear him apart on the counter to tee up Atlético Madrid's only goal of the evening, but he also left his side a man down in the closing moments. The Spaniard was shown red for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity after fouling Alexander Sørloth, who was clean through on goal.

Jules Koundé has been a defensive weak link throughout the season and did little to change that perception in Barcelona's most important fixture of the year. The Frenchman was completely lost trying to track Lookman in transition, and his failure to contain the Atlético Madrid forward ultimately denied his team a spot in the semifinals.

Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Atlético Madrid (4-2-3-1)

Ferran Torres

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Joan García—7.4: Had relatively little to deal with for long stretches, but produced a crucial stop against Robin Le Normand late on to keep Barcelona in contention. Finished the night with four saves.

RB: Jules Koundé—7.3: Completely caught out on Atlético Madrid's goal. Stood watching on the halfway line while Lookman was already in full stride. Unreliable throughout the night.

CB: Eric García—5.9: Outpaced by Llorente on the counter in the buildup to Lookman's goal. Sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity after clumsily bringing down Alexander Sørloth.

CB: Gerard Martín—7.7: His poor positioning for Lookman's goal overshadowed what was an otherwise dependable performance. Lapses in concentration are becoming a recurring issue for the 24-year-old.

LB: João Cancelo—7.2: Missed Rashford playing ahead of him. Lacked understanding with Fermín and as a result was far less influential going forward than he had been in the first leg.

DM: Gavi—7.7: Went about his work quietly and effectively. Used his physicality to support Pedri and was composed in possession.

DM: Pedri—7.4: The heartbeat of Barcelona's play, as ever. No midfielder on the pitch matched his level, and he underlined that with 103 completed passes.

RW: Lamine Yamal—9.0: Ready for the occasion from the first whistle. Capitalised on Clément Lenglet's error and coolly finished to breathe life into his team.

AM: Dani Olmo—7.9: Played a superb through ball to Torres to set up the second goal. Needed to be more influential in the second half with two defenders focused on Yamal.

LW: Fermín López—6.8: Below his usual standard in what was an uncommon start on the wing. Took a nasty boot to the face from Juan Musso and bravely played on.

ST: Ferran Torres—8.7: Continued his fine run of form from the weekend. Assisted Yamal's opener before getting on the scoresheet himself, all within 20 minutes. A perfect time to rediscover his best.

SUB: Robert Lewandowski (68' for Torres)—6.2: Managed only four touches. Simply not good enough.

SUB: Marcus Rashford (68' for Fermín)—6.2: Had an opportunity to make an impact in stoppage time but rushed his cutback. Otherwise struggled to get into the game.

SUB: Frenkie de Jong (81' for Gavi)—N/A: Looked comfortable alongside Pedri. Brought some stability to his depleted side.

SUB: Ronald Araújo (89' for Cancelo)—N/A: Had a golden opportunity in stoppage time to force extra time, but failed to keep his header on target.

SUB: Roony Bardghji (90' for Olmo)—N/A: Fashioned a decent opportunity despite his brief cameo.

Subs not used: Diego Kochen (GK), Wojciech Szczęsny (GK), Alejandro Balde, Álvaro Cortés, Marc Casadó, Tommy Marqués, Xavi Espart.
