Barcelona Seal Last-Minute Registrations, Locking In Shirt Numbers for Rodri and Gordon

Barcelona Seal Last-Minute Registrations, Locking In Shirt Numbers for Rodri and Gordon

With just one day to go before they begin their 2026–27 La Liga title defense, Barcelona officially completed the registration of all four summer acquisitions.

Now back in compliance with La Liga's 1:1 financial spending regulations, Barcelona was able to invest heavily this summer, bringing in Rodri, Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and João Cancelo to the Catalan club. The defending Spanish champions also added young attackers Jesse Bisiwu and Hamza Abdelkarim, who will be part of the reserve setup.

The initial excitement surrounding the transfers quickly gave way to concern. As days went by, there appeared to be little headway in registering Hansi Flick's new arrivals, with supporters fearing a potential repeat of the Dani Olmo fiasco from two years prior.

Reports even suggested Gordon's representatives held talks with the club regarding registration issues, but all such concerns have now been resolved. Rodri, Gordon, Adeyemi and Cancelo are all officially registered and eligible to feature against Elche on Sunday.

Bisiwu, however, will be registered with Barça Atlètic, the club's reserve side. He will not travel with the first team to the Estadio Martínez Valero.

Summer Signings' Jersey Numbers Revealed

Rodri

With Flick's four senior recruits now officially registered in La Liga, their squad numbers have been confirmed. Spain's top division only permits first-team players to wear shirt numbers 1 through 25.

Rodri will sport the number 16 shirt he wore at Manchester City and with the Spanish national team. The number had previously been assigned to Fermín Lopez, but the attacking midfielder relinquished it to his compatriot. Fermín will now take the newly available number 7 shirt, vacated following Ferran Torres's move to PSG.

Gordon has been assigned number 17 at Barcelona. The winger has worn that number previously with England. His favored number 10 shirt is already taken by Lamine Yamal.

Adeyemi takes number 14, which was worn by Marcus Rashford during last season. The German international wore 27 at Borussia Dortmund, but that number falls outside the range available to La Liga first-team players.

Unsurprisingly, Cancelo will once again don the number 2 shirt, the same number he wore during both of his previous spells at Barcelona.

Will Flick's New Signings Play vs. Elche?

Flick remained characteristically guarded during his pre-match press conference on Saturday regarding his starting lineup, especially concerning who will lead the attack. Both Gordon and Adeyemi are candidates to start as striker, though whether either will play as a No. 9 against Elche won't be known until Sunday.

The German manager was considerably more open when it came to Cancelo. "He could play tomorrow," Flick said. "He's ready and possesses outstanding technique and tremendous passion. He contributed enormously for us last season."

Flick also confirmed that Rodri will not feature against Elche. The World Cup winner, who has been training on an individual basis, is anticipated to rejoin the squad next week.

"I'm delighted he's here," Flick said of Rodri, who has committed the next four years to Barcelona. "He's an exceptional player, a true leader with a great character. Our plan is for him to integrate with the group on Monday."
