Barcelona Seal Stunning Move for Newcastle Sensation Anthony Gordon, Reports Claim

Newcastle United and Barcelona have reportedly agreed on a transfer deal for standout winger Anthony Gordon, with the player scheduled to complete his medical in Catalonia tomorrow.

The reigning Spanish champions were always among the frontrunners for the Englishman's signature, competing with Bayern Munich and Chelsea, but their interest intensified after sporting director Deco met with Gordon's camp during a recent visit to England.

Now, The Athletic reports that Barcelona's opening bid of €80 million (£69.3 million, $93.2 million) plus bonuses for the 25-year-old has been accepted by Newcastle, with Gordon also having agreed to personal terms.

The winger, who is expected to feature for England at the 2026 World Cup, netted 39 goals across 152 outings for the Magpies since his arrival at St James' Park in January 2023. Newcastle originally paid £40 million ($53.7 million) to Everton for his services and are now set to pocket a substantial profit on the sale.

Gordon's anticipated move to the Camp Nou may also signal that Barcelona are unlikely to activate Marcus Rashford's $35 million (€30 million, £26 million) purchase clause, meaning the winger would return to Manchester United at the end of the summer.

How Gordon Fits at Barcelona

Barcelona were always going to strengthen their attack this summer following Robert Lewandowski's departure. Names such as Julián Alvarez, João Pedro, and Omar Marmoush had all been linked with the Catalan club, but Gordon quickly rose to the top of their shortlist.

The 25-year-old is not a like-for-like replacement for Lewandowski, however, unlike several of the other candidates considered. Gordon is most comfortable on the left flank, a position currently occupied by Raphinha.

One scenario sees him taking over that role from the Brazilian, shifting Raphinha into the No. 10 position — a spot where he is more than capable of excelling. That would still leave Barcelona without a dedicated striker, and their ongoing financial constraints may restrict their ability to pursue one after committing such a large fee to Gordon.

Alternatively, Flick could use Gordon as a centre-forward, allowing Raphinha to remain on the left wing while the No. 10 role goes to either Fermín López or Dani Olmo. The England international has experience leading the line, but adapting to a new club, a new league, and a secondary position at the start of the 2026–27 campaign would undoubtedly present its challenges.
