Barcelona Seal Surprise Attacking Deal—But Fans Are Left Wanting More

After having their opening offer turned down, Barcelona have reportedly agreed on a deal with Borussia Dortmund for winger Karim Adeyemi, who becomes the club's second attacking addition heading to Catalonia this summer.

Adeyemi, who contributed 10 goals and eight assists across 44 outings for BVB last season, was willing to depart Germany this summer in pursuit of more regular playing time. Earlier reports suggested he favored a move to the Premier League, but an unexpected approach from the reigning Spanish champions now has the 24-year-old heading to La Liga instead.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Dortmund accepted Barcelona's revised offer of €22 million ($25.2 million) plus €7 million ($8 million) in performance-related bonuses, tied to trophies and appearances, for the German international.

Dortmund had initially rejected the Catalans' opening €20 million ($22.8 million) proposal for Adeyemi, but came to an agreement just 24 hours later for the additional €2 million. The forward is set to put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Spanish club.

Adeyemi now joins former Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon as Barcelona's first two signings of the summer window. Both acquisitions align with the club's primary objective heading into the 2026–27 campaign: strengthening their attacking options.

Barcelona Slowly Plugging Holes in Their Attack

Anthony Gordon

The reigning Spanish champions said goodbye to talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season, leaving a significant void in Barcelona's attack. The Polish striker, who has since joined MLS outfit Chicago Fire, shouldered the goalscoring responsibilities for the Catalans over the past four years, netting 120 times in 193 appearances.

Barcelona also parted ways with Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford, who wrapped up his season-long spell with 25 goal contributions. The winger openly expressed his wish to remain at the club, but Barcelona ultimately chose not to activate his €30 million ($34.3 million) purchase option.

Losing both players left Barcelona with a pressing need for attacking reinforcements, opening the door for Gordon's and now Adeyemi's arrivals. However, the latter is likely to serve as a depth option for Hansi Flick — someone to inject energy from the bench or provide cover when the likes of Lamine Yamal or Raphinha require a breather.

Adeyemi managed just 36 goals in 146 appearances during his time at Dortmund. He was also omitted from Germany's World Cup squad following a disappointing campaign and carries a well-documented injury record.

Unlike Gordon, Adeyemi has limited prospects of breaking into Flick's starting lineup.

Flick Still Out for a Blockbuster No. 9

Julián Álvarez

Adeyemi's potential playing time at Barcelona could shrink even further should the club land a high-profile striker to fill Lewandowski's role. Gordon can operate as a No. 9, and Ferran Torres remains another possibility, but Barcelona have made no secret of their desire to bring in a marquee center-forward.

Barcelona's well-publicized pursuit of Julián Alvarez has been one of the defining transfer stories of the summer, though Atlético Madrid rejected their opening bid for the Argentine. Alvarez himself voiced his desire to move on, but Diego Simeone appears firmly opposed to releasing his key striker.

The Catalans also reportedly made preliminary contact regarding Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, though those efforts were quickly rebuffed.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made clear that the club remains keen on Alvarez, though the asking price for the Argentina international has climbed even higher after Real Madrid had a somewhat provocative €150 million ($175 million) bid turned away.

The pressure on Yamal and Raphinha would intensify enormously next season if Barcelona fail to secure a suitable Lewandowski successor. Gordon and Adeyemi each have roles to play, but their combined output would need to be exceptional to adequately compensate for the goals Lewandowski delivered since his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2022.
