Barcelona Shatter 18-Game European Hoodoo With Dominant Victory Over Aston Villa

In a heavy rainstorm at Camp Nou, Barcelona had little trouble dispatching Aston Villa 3–0 to bounce back to winning form in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

The home side struck early, as they have done almost habitually this season within the first 10 minutes. Barcelona took advantage of a costly João Gomes error, with Lamine Yamal collecting the Brazilian's wayward pass and converting it into the opening goal with a curling effort.

Hansi Flick's men were the superior side for the remainder of the first half but struggled to carve out clear-cut chances to extend their lead. The visitors had their spells but failed to make them count, and Barça held onto their one-goal cushion heading into the interval.

Barcelona came out with greater intensity after the break and doubled their advantage on 53 minutes when Raphinha continued his outstanding season, unleashing a strike that deflected slightly through Pau Torres's legs and nestled into the bottom corner. Just over 10 minutes later, the Brazilian sealed the victory with a simple tap-in from an excellent João Cancelo cross.

The comfortable lead allowed Flick to rest several key players as Barcelona coasted to the final whistle. Nevertheless, there was notable jubilation at full time, as the Catalans finally snapped a miserable 18-game run and recorded their first Champions League clean sheet since April 2025.

The Catalans sit comfortably within the top eight of the league phase standings and now shift their focus to a pivotal La Liga encounter against Atlético Madrid ahead of the November international break.

The One Thing We Can't Ignore

Lamine Yamal.

It appears that with every match he plays, Yamal sets a new record. Against Aston Villa, the Barcelona No. 10 scored his 14th career Champions League goal, surpassing Kylian Mbappé for the most goals in the competition's history by a player yet to turn 20.

Since his first European goal against Monaco in the opening game of the 2024–25 season, Yamal has steadily developed into a genuine threat in front of goal. Having netted four Champions League goals in 2024–25 and six in 2025–26, the teenager already has three in four matches this campaign.

Even when he isn't at his sharpest, Yamal now appears more capable than ever of producing a goal out of nowhere—as demonstrated by his strike that briefly equalized against Paris Saint-Germain in his last European outing.

Yamal has now overtaken Mbappé as the leading teenage scorer in Europe's top club competition, with Erling Haaland rounding out the top three with 10 goals. With the Spaniard not reaching his 20th birthday until next summer, he has the rest of this season to extend his lead in a record that is unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

The season is still young, yet Yamal already has seven Champions League goal contributions, just three behind his personal best from last season and already equaling his total assist count with four. Yamal is firmly on course for the most statistically impressive season of his career, and with another milestone added to his growing list of records, he is already building a compelling case for the 2027 Ballon d'Or.

Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Aston Villa (4-2-3-1)

Raphinha.

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*

GK: Joan García—8.3: García has essentially been operating as a third center-back this season, regularly venturing 20 yards from his penalty area to act as a sweeper when opponents attempt to play balls in behind the defensive line. Superb on the one occasion he was called upon between the posts.

RB: Brian Fariñas—6.8: Another highly dependable display from the La Masia product, once again deployed out of position at right back in only his second appearance for the first team. Occasionally caught out of position, but his work in possession was near-faultless.

CB: Pau Cubarsí—7.5: Was tested in difficult situations more frequently than he would have preferred but largely dealt with them well, before asserting his dominance in the second half.

CB: Gerard Martín—7.6: One of his finest outings of the season, winning the majority of his individual battles against the physical Nicolas Jackson and executing the high defensive line with precision on several occasions.

LB: João Cancelo—8.2: A difficult first half heightened concerns over his recent dip in form. However, he improved markedly after the interval and provided a superb assist for Barça's third goal.

CM: Rodri—7.0: Looked uncomfortable for much of his time on the pitch, despite managing to bypass Villa's press with some well-executed switches of play. It was not his most convincing performance, and he was somewhat unexpectedly withdrawn at halftime.

CM: Pedri—6.9: Much like his midfield partner, Pedri found it difficult to dictate play for Barça, with the ball rarely moving through the center of the pitch at times, resulting in a very direct style of play.

RW: Lamine Yamal—8.4: After escaping a potentially serious injury from a reckless early challenge, Yamal was on hand to capitalize on an Aston Villa mistake and open the scoring with a composed finish.

AM: Fermín López—8.2: Integral to Barcelona's highly effective pressing game on the night and continued his productive campaign by contributing yet another assist.

LW: Anthony Gordon—7.8: Revisited his Premier League roots and renewed his duel with Matty Cash down the left flank. Despite struggling in direct confrontations, he combined well throughout the match and came close to scoring thanks to his tenacious pressing.

ST: Raphinha—9.0: Likely experienced for the first time the frustration many strikers feel when service is lacking. Nevertheless, the first time he had a clear shooting opportunity, he doubled Barcelona's lead early in the second half before completing his brace with a clinical poacher's finish.

SUB: Marc Bernal (46' for Rodri)—6.4: A solid cameo from Bernal, who earned applause for a couple of neat turns and even better passing.

SUB: Gavi (69' for Fermín López)—6.3: Typically energetic and industrious from the moment he came on, though the rest of the team opted to recycle possession rather than push for a fourth goal.

SUB: Frenkie de Jong (70' for Pedri)—6.1: Completed 16 of the 17 passes he attempted.

SUB: Gabriel Jesus (70' for Raphinha)—7.1: Clearly still haunted by the costly turnover that contributed to Barça's El Clásico defeat, Jesus threw himself into defensive duties, tracking opponents deep to win the ball back. Produced a couple of impressive nutmegs and attacking moments.

SUB: Alejandro Balde (82' for Fariñas)—N/A

Subs not used: Wojciech Szczęsny (GK), Dominik Livaković (GK), Álex Campos, Guillem Víctor, Orian Goren, Hamza Abdelkarim, Karim Adeyemi.
