Barcelona Shine Bright in La Liga Opener: Champions Stun Elche with Dazzling Season Debut

Barcelona wasted no time making a statement, thrashing Elche 5–0 in a commanding 2026–27 La Liga season opener on Sunday evening.

For the second consecutive season, it was Raphinha who netted Barcelona's first goal of the campaign. The newly appointed club captain earned a penalty and coolly slotted it into the bottom corner to get the Blaugrana celebrations underway just 15 minutes into the new season.

Barcelona didn't completely overwhelm their opponents in the opening half, but they did extend their advantage before the interval. A slick combination involving Raphinha was finished off by Karim Adeyemi, who marked his La Liga debut with his maiden goal for Barça.

The goals flowed freely in the second half as Raphinha completed his double and Fermín López put the icing on the cake with two goals of his own. Summer signing Anthony Gordon also made an immediate impression, registering a pair of assists on his Barça debut.

Without ever hitting top gear, missing several key regulars and clearly still shaking off some early-season rust, Barcelona comprehensively took apart Elche in their season opener. It took just one match for Flick's side to hint at the formidable force they could develop into.

The One Thing We Can't Ignore

Raphinha

Who Flick would deploy as the focal point of Barcelona's attack was arguably the most pressing question heading into the match. Following a summer of an intense but ultimately fruitless pursuit of Julián Alvarez—bookended by the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, Barcelona's two strikers from the previous campaign—it was Raphinha who led the line against Elche.

Reports emerging from Catalonia suggest that Flick is satisfied with his current attacking options, happy to rely on a fluid and near-positionless offensive system featuring dynamic, technically gifted forwards who aren't traditional strikers—a blueprint similar to the one that helped Paris Saint-Germain claim back-to-back Champions League titles.

In their season debut, Barcelona showed no shortage of attacking firepower.

It's evident that Barcelona's striker situation remains a work in progress and that Flick will likely experiment with various options, but absent any surprise addition up front, Raphinha could well serve as the team's primary center forward this season. The Brazilian's relentless pressing caused Elche significant problems when building from the back. Combined with his proven goal-scoring record, he could be the answer to Barcelona's absence of a natural No. 9.

However, once Anthony Gordon came on for Lamine Yamal, it was the England international who took up the striker role, with Raphinha shifting out to the right—and Gordon promptly assisted the Brazilian's brace. If all three feature in the same starting lineup, it could be Gordon who leads the attack, with Yamal on his right and Raphinha on his left.

Barcelona Player Ratings vs. Elche (4-3-2-1)

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*

GK: Joan García—7.6: Had very little to do throughout the night, but when called upon for his first one-on-one of the season, he produced a superb save to prevent Elche from getting back into the contest.

RB: Eric García—7.9: Might well have had an assist had Yamal been more clinical in the early stages, but García still delivered a solid season debut. A vital last-ditch clearance inside the penalty area likely denied Elche an equalizer within the opening half hour.

CB: Andreas Christensen—7.4: In his first start of the calendar year for Barça, Christensen was immaculate. He handled his defensive responsibilities well and completed the most passes of any player on the pitch without a single misplaced ball.

CB: Gerard Martín—7.7: Much like his central defensive partner, Martín was faultless throughout, topping the charts with 13 defensive actions.

LB: Xavi Espart—8.5: Looked slightly uneasy early on playing away from his preferred right side, but his trademark tenacity did produce the turnover that led to Raphinha winning his penalty. He was outstanding for the remainder of the match.

DM: Marc Bernal—7.7: Gave the ball away with routine passes on multiple occasions in what was a below-par display. His failure to assert Barça's dominance in midfield left the Catalans lacking control. He settled and grew into the game as it wore on.

DM: Gavi—6.5: Gavi's injury troubles resurfaced just 45 minutes into the new season, with the midfielder departing the pitch before halftime and heading straight down the tunnel. Given his recent history with injuries, concern was immediate.

RW: Lamine Yamal—7.1: Of all Barcelona's attackers, Yamal was the least influential on the night. On the limited chances he had, he failed to find the target. It wasn't the commanding start to the season that he or the club had hoped for.

AM: Fermín López—9.0: A subdued outing for the attacking midfielder, who was barely involved in the areas where he causes the most damage. That all changed late in the game when he burst to life and netted twice in 10 minutes to round off a perfect season debut for the champions.

LW: Karim Adeyemi—8.0: Made a slow and inconsistent start, but responded emphatically with a composed finish to double Barça's lead on the stroke of halftime and open his account for the club.

ST: Raphinha—9.4: Needed just 15 minutes operating as a striker to get off the mark for the season, converting the penalty he had won himself.

SUB: Pedri (45' for Gavi)—6.5: Not eye-catching but undeniably effective. Pedri is still visibly shaking off some rust, but a superb through-ball was the catalyst for Barça's fourth goal.

SUB: Dani Olmo (65' for Adeyemi)—6.2: Completed all 15 of his attempted passes during his brief cameo.

SUB: Anthony Gordon (65' for Yamal)—8.2: Needed just five minutes to register his first two assists in Barça colors. A highly encouraging debut from the England international.

SUB: João Cancelo (80' for Raphinha)—N/A

SUB: Jules Koundé (80' for Bernal)—N/A

Subs not used: Wojciech Szczęsny (GK), Eder Aller (GK), Álvaro Cortes, Jordi Pesquer, Pau Cubarsí, Brian Fariñas, Hamza Abdelkarim
