Barcelona Star Blasts Flick Over Limited Role: 'I'm Not Happy'

Barcelona Star Blasts Flick Over Limited Role: 'I'm Not Happy'

Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with his lack of playing time this season, informing manager Hansi Flick that he feels he warrants a bigger role in the squad.

The 20-year-old has featured in 22 matches across all competitions during his first season in Catalonia, yet has accumulated only 615 minutes of action. Flick has handed Bardghji just four La Liga starts, alongside three appearances in cup competitions.

"100% I am not happy," Bardghji told SVT Sport,

"I have patience, even though I may have thought I deserved to play more."

He did, however, acknowledge the stiff competition for minutes against players boasting years of experience at the elite level.

"Respect to those who have been there for a long time, my teammates. I know what I can do, I have good self-confidence."

Bardghji at Risk of Regretting Dream Move

"It has always been my dream to play there," Bardghji said of his move to Barcelona last summer. "Winning the first trophy was great. It was a great feeling."

At the time of his transfer, Bardghji was recovering from a serious injury and allowing his Copenhagen contract to expire, meaning his fee of just $2.4 million (€2 million) drew little attention.

In truth, Bardghji had attracted interest from numerous clubs, including several of Europe's top sides, having already spent four years in Copenhagen's senior setup to cement his status as one of the most exciting young talents in the world.

The opportunity to join his dream club was one Bardghji clearly felt he couldn't pass up, but the Sweden international has since encountered a familiar obstacle for players his age. At top clubs like Barcelona, earning minutes as a young, inexperienced player can prove extremely difficult.

A significant challenge for Bardghji is that his preferred position is on the right wing, where he faces direct competition from Lamine Yamal who, ironically, is two years younger but already possesses an impressive wealth of experience at the highest level of the game.

Bardghji has largely served as backup to Yamal, but that peripheral role is clearly insufficient for the youngster, and his decision to publicly voice his frustrations may not be well received within Camp Nou.

Raphinha's Injury Opens Door to Young Winger

Challenging Yamal for his spot is essentially a futile endeavor for Bardghji, who may need to rely on his versatility to carve out more playing time in the Barcelona lineup.

An opportunity has emerged following the injury to left winger Raphinha, who is set to be sidelined for more than a month with a muscular problem sustained while on international duty.

Bardghji automatically rises one spot in the depth chart under Flick, though the path to a starting berth remains congested due to the presence of Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford. Dani Olmo, Fermín López, and Ferran Torres have all logged more minutes on the left wing than Bardghji this season.

Bardghji's claim that he can stay patient will undoubtedly be put to the test over the remaining months of the campaign, after which a decision on his future will need to be reached. His limited playing time benefits no one, and a loan departure could be a realistic option, while a permanent exit may not be entirely out of the question given Yamal's dominance ahead of him.
