Barcelona Star Defender Locks Down Future with Contract Extension Confirmation

Barcelona's summer preparation tour moves forward in South Korea. Upon the squad's return to Catalonia, Jules Koundé is set to sign a fresh five-year contract with the club.
Reports of Barcelona and Koundé finalizing terms for a contract extension emerged recently. With Barcelona gearing up for their second pre-season match, Koundé has publicly acknowledged the developments.
"Yes, I believe it's just a few days away," Koundé stated regarding his contract renewal. "Once we return [to Barcelona] I expect everything will be completed, so I'm pleased about that.
"The process has been quite swift. Both the club and I shared the same vision for my future here. I'm delighted to remain with the team, I feel at home with this squad. I'm grateful to be part of a club that competes for every trophy each season. I never considered departing."
Manchester City had allegedly shown interest in luring Koundé from Barcelona, with unofficial contact reportedly made with the player's representatives in recent weeks.
Nevertheless, following challenges during his initial seasons at Barcelona as Koundé adapted from his natural center-back role to right-back, the French defender flourished in 2024–25.
The 26-year-old became indispensable in Hansi Flick's formation. He established a formidable connection with Lamine Yamal down the right side, featuring in 50 matches last campaign until a hamstring problem sidelined him for the season's final weeks—his unavailability significantly impacted Barcelona's Champions League elimination.
Koundé adds to the roster of crucial 2024–25 Barcelona performers who have secured contract extensions, joining Iñigo Martínez, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Wojciech Szczęsny, with Frenkie de Jong and Eric García potentially following suit.
