Barcelona Struck By Yet Another Crippling Injury—Exposing Their Most Dangerous Weakness

Just as it seemed like his injury nightmare was finally over, Andreas Christensen has suffered yet another setback that will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.

The Barcelona center back was forced off at the 60-minute mark during Saturday's 3–1 victory over Sevilla with a muscular problem. At first it looked as though he had made contact with Robbie Ure, but the Danish defender quickly clutched his left thigh and signaled for the medical staff to come onto the field.

He limped off the pitch after several minutes and was visibly upset upon reaching the bench, seemingly already aware that he had sustained a serious injury. Hansi Flick stated after the match that he anticipated Christensen would be out "a few weeks," and further assessments conducted over the weekend confirmed the 30-year-old faces another spell on the sidelines.

"Tests have confirmed that first team player Andreas Christensen has a left thigh strain," Barcelona announced in an official statement. "He will be unavailable for the time being and his evolution will determine his return."

While no specific return date was provided, reports suggest Christensen is expected to miss approximately four to six weeks.

Andreas Christensen's Never-Ending Injury Woes

Christensen's evident frustration over his latest injury is entirely understandable, given that the Dane is coming off two seasons in which his career was largely derailed by persistent fitness problems.

The former Chelsea defender appeared in just 18 games last season as he dealt with calf troubles before missing six months due to an ACL tear. Even so, that was considerably more than in 2024–25, when Achilles tendon issues and muscular problems limited him to a mere six appearances.

In total, Christensen has missed more than 80 games for club and country over the past two years, having featured in 74 matches for Barça during his first two seasons at the club.

Barcelona clearly hold the Dane in high regard, which is why they handed him a two-year contract extension in the summer rather than allowing him to depart on a free transfer. He had appeared in seven of eight Barça fixtures this season and started five of them, including three of the last four.

Just as Christensen appeared to be cementing his spot in Flick's starting eleven, he finds himself back in the treatment room — and the timing of this setback could prove costly for the Blaugrana.

Christensen's recovery will begin during the three-week international break, allowing him to work on his rehabilitation without missing any Barça fixtures. However, a demanding and high-stakes stretch of Barcelona's schedule awaits on the other side of this international window.

Barcelona's flawless start to the season will face a stern examination during a grueling run of fixtures in October, featuring high-profile Champions League and La Liga encounters. A backline that has failed to record a clean sheet in four consecutive matches now also lacks a regular starter heading into this formidable stretch.

A home clash against Getafe serves as a warm-up before three consecutive away fixtures. First up is a trip to one of the most intimidating venues in European football when Barça face Galatasaray in the Champions League. That is followed by a visit to Real Betis, who currently sit third in La Liga and inflicted Real Madrid's first defeat of the season back in September.

All of that serves as a prelude to by far the most demanding week of Barça's early campaign. The Catalans must travel to face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the Champions League league phase. As if that weren't challenging enough, Real Madrid then visit Camp Nou just five days later for the opening Clásico of the season to round off October.

Christensen may potentially target a return to action by the time El Clásico arrives, but Gerard Martín and Pau Cubarsí will need to step up as Flick's primary center back pairing throughout this hectic period. Either right-back option of Eric García or Jules Koundé are the most likely candidates to fill in at the heart of defense should the German manager wish to give his first-choice pairing some respite.

To the surprise of many, Barcelona opted against signing a center back for the second consecutive summer window, despite coming off a season plagued by defensive struggles. Flick's confidence in his existing squad options will now be put to the ultimate test without Christensen — and potentially goalkeeper Joan García — as Barcelona enter a run of fixtures that will challenge their dream start to the season.
