Barcelona Unveils Strategic Spending Plan for Dro Fernandez Transfer Windfall
Al Ahly's football director Walid Salah El-Din has verified Barcelona's signing of Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim in a transfer that coincides with Dro Fernández's upcoming departure.
Abdelkarim became an unexpected Barcelona target earlier this month. The 18-year-old striker made his mark at the U17 World Cup in November, netting twice during the group phase as Egypt progressed to the elimination rounds. After returning to the defending league champions, Abdelkarim earned his place in the first team, establishing himself as a consistent performer in the Egyptian League Cup.
This groundbreaking deal with Barcelona—making Abdelkarim the first Egyptian player to join the club—has fluctuated dramatically between completion and cancellation over the past few days.
Two weeks prior, the previously reported "complete agreement" seemed to have fallen through. Al Ahly allegedly insisted that Abdelkarim sign a contract extension with the Egyptian club before joining Barcelona on loan to safeguard their interests. The player and his father were said to have firmly refused these conditions.
It now seems that a middle ground has been found.

Al Ahly's Salah El-Din is cited by Mundo Deportivo as confirming Abdelkarim's move with positive sentiment from all parties. "Yes, Hamza Abdelkarim is joining Barcelona," he stated. "I hope he achieves great success and can build his career there, establishing himself at Barça without needing to return to Egypt."
The same source indicates that Abdelkarim's season-long loan includes a €5 million ($5.9 million) purchase option that would activate automatically if he features in five or more matches for the reserve team.
This amount happens to be slightly below the sum Barcelona expects to receive from Dro Fernández's transfer.

Reports of Fernández's unexpected transfer to PSG emerged earlier this month. The youth prospect who had impressed Hansi Flick during the summer felt he wasn't receiving sufficient playing opportunities.
Flick was displeased with this turn of events, but no amount of public frustration from the manager could change the determined 18-year-old's mind.
Following connections with various Premier League and Bundesliga teams, PSG became the leading candidate—though it's unclear why Luis Enrique's defending European champions would offer easier breakthrough opportunities than Barcelona.
Regardless, Fabrizio Romano announced on Sunday that the clubs had reached an agreement days after personal terms with Fernández were already finalized. Notably, the French club is set to pay a fee "slightly above" the widely reported €6 million release clause.
In any case, Barcelona has exchanged one promising teenage striker for another while potentially earning a €1 million profit.
