Barcelona Winger Dealt Devastating Blow as Cruel Injury Threatens New Season

Barcelona are set to lose winger Roony Bardghji for a large portion of the 2026–27 season after he suffered a torn ACL.

The news has come as a blow to Barça just two weeks before the start of the new campaign, with Hansi Flick's side kicking off their title defense against Elche on Aug. 23.

The reigning back-to-back La Liga champions have had a relatively low-key preseason so far, most recently taking part in a triangular summer tournament featuring Udinese and Nottingham Forest. Barça defeated the English side 1–0 but fell to the Italian club by the same margin.

They are currently without a lengthy list of first-team regulars, with eight players having been part of Luis de la Fuente's World Cup-winning Spain squad.

Those absences have given fringe players a chance to make an impression, though Barcelona had already reached a decision on Bardghji's future. A summer exit had been on the cards before the news of his serious knee injury emerged.

Barcelona's Roony Bardghji Transfer Plan Scuppered By Injury

Roony Bardghji

Fabrizio Romano reported over the weekend that Barça had been planning to offload Bardghji after just one season at the club, most likely via a loan move. The Swedish international was left out of their traveling squad to Italy for friendlies against Udinese and Forest.

He was participating in training on Monday when he sustained a serious knee injury, later confirmed to be a torn ACL. Consequently, the 20-year-old will not be heading out on loan to gain more consistent playing time this season. Instead, he faces a recovery period of at least six months on the sidelines.

Having joined Barça for a modest fee from Copenhagen last year, Bardghji made only limited appearances under Flick until Lamine Yamal picked up a hamstring injury in April. The Swede earned three starts across Barça's final six La Liga matches of the season, but failed to register a single goal or assist.

His debut season at the club concluded with two goals and four assists across 28 appearances in all competitions.

The ACL diagnosis is particularly alarming given that it is an injury he has already experienced. Bardghji missed nearly a year of football during the 2023–24 campaign, just as his profile was beginning to rise, due to serious ligament damage.

Who Could Fill Roony Bardghji's Roster Spot at Barcelona?

Karim Adeyemi

Barcelona's intention to loan or sell Bardghji indicates that his injury is unlikely to change their transfer strategy. Flick appears satisfied with his current attacking options, and some reports indicate that a backup for Julián Alvarez will not be pursued if Atlético Madrid continue to hold firm in negotiations.

Yamal remains the undisputed starter on the right wing, and Flick is expected to deploy summer arrival Karim Adeyemi as his deputy. The German brings a very different skill set to Yamal, but is versatile enough to operate across the front line. Flick should relish the opportunity to exploit Adeyemi's blistering pace to pull apart opposition defenses.

Flick has also shown creativity by deploying the likes of Gavi and Fermín López in wide positions, while Jesse Bisiwu is another winger who has arrived at Barça during the summer window. The 18-year-old, primarily a left winger, has already made his unofficial debut for the club, coming in Udine.

He is unlikely to be a realistic option to deputize for Yamal, but could work his way into Flick's thinking if he continues to impress as preseason draws to a close.
