Barcelona's miserable loss to Real Madrid on Sunday evening was compounded when medical assessments confirmed that utility player Xavi Espart faces an extended spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury.
The opening El Clásico of the campaign was still goalless when the 19-year-old fullback became involved in a challenge with Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni. The French international went to ground and won possession; however, his follow-through sent his retracting legs crashing directly into Espart's right ankle.
Espart was unable to lift his right foot, and his ankle gave way, planted in the turf as Tchouaméni's full body weight collided with him at pace. Play carried on, but within moments the young defender collapsed and had to be substituted just thirty minutes into El Clásico.
Real Madrid shocked Barcelona and claimed El Clásico 2–1 courtesy of a Kylian Mbappé double. The outcome brought an end to Barcelona's unbeaten start to the La Liga season and closed the gap to just three points in the table.
Espart's setback, however, may prove an even greater loss than the result itself, particularly given the fragile state of Barcelona's defensive unit.
When Will Xavi Espart Return From Ankle Injury?

Espart had emerged as Barcelona's standout performer this season and was widely regarded as the finest player on the pitch in the recent loss to Paris Saint-Germain. The defender, comfortable at either right or left back, had cemented his place in Hansi Flick's preferred starting lineup, featuring in nine of the club's 13 matches this term. The latest injury setback will now keep him out for a prolonged stretch.
Scans conducted following El Clásico revealed a concerning diagnosis, and Barcelona issued an official statement confirming the La Masia product faces a lengthy absence.
"Tests carried out have confirmed that Xavi Espart is suffering from an injury to the syndesmosis joint in his right ankle due to a collision with an opposing player in the game against Real Madrid," the statement read. "The player will be out for around seven weeks."
It's a devastating blow for both Barcelona and the in-form Espart. The teenager could now be absent for as many as eight fixtures over the next two months, including several high-stakes encounters that will shape the direction of Barcelona's season.

Barcelona Sinks Further Into Defensive Injury Crisis

Espart becomes the fourth Barcelona defender currently nursing an injury, with Flick having lost three backline players to physical problems across the last three matches.
Andreas Christensen has been absent with a muscular complaint since the final fixture before the September–October international break, while both Eric García and Jules Koundé have sat out the past two games after picking up knocks during the recent victory over Real Betis.
With Espart ruled out, Alejandro Balde—widely expected to depart the club last summer—is set to receive an extended run at left back, with João Cancelo slotting in on the right side.
Nevertheless, with four defenders currently unavailable, Barcelona have no remaining senior options should another injury strike at the back.
Flick acknowledged that Barcelona will need to promote defenders from La Masia in order to manage the worsening injury situation. The German manager will be desperate to see his first-team players return to fitness as quickly as possible. Barça's defensive line has begun to show alarming vulnerabilities in recent outings, once again proving to be the squad's most troubled area for the third consecutive season.
