Battle for the 2026 Ballon d'Or: Can Harry Kane Outshine Rodri and Lamine Yamal?

Battle for the 2026 Ballon d'Or: Can Harry Kane Outshine Rodri and Lamine Yamal?

England skipper and Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has said it would be "incredible" to claim the Ballon d'Or, though the outcome is ultimately beyond his "control."

Kane remains among the frontrunners to claim football's most coveted individual award for an outstanding 2025–26 campaign. The striker netted an extraordinary 61 goals in 51 outings for Bayern Munich, claiming both the Bundesliga Golden Boot and the European Golden Boot.

He then delivered a stunning tournament for England at the 2026 World Cup, scoring six times in seven matches—a total that would surely have been greater had he featured in the defensively open third-place playoff against France.

Despite all the speculation surrounding his Ballon d'Or prospects, Kane is staying grounded. "I am incredibly proud of the season I put together last year," he said. "The Ballon d'Or is as big as it gets from an individual standpoint.

"The Ballon d'Or isn't in my hands. I've done everything I can in terms of my performances on the pitch. It now comes down to votes, other people, the media, and things I have no control over. So we'll see how it plays out.

"Of course it would be incredible if it happened. But there are still two or three months before that decision is made, so it's not something I'm focused on right now."

What's Hurting Kane's Ballon d'Or Chances

Harry Kane

Kane's statistics tell their own story. He enjoyed a remarkable individual season, netting 73 goals across all competitions for club and country. He also helped Bayern Munich secure the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, before guiding England to their finest World Cup result since 1966.

Yet two notable absences stand out on his otherwise glittering résumé: the Champions League and the World Cup. Had Kane lifted either trophy, he would almost certainly be the clear favourite for the Ballon d'Or. However, Bayern Munich were eliminated by defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinals, while England fell to Argentina at the same stage of the World Cup.

Failing to win the Champions League is no longer considered a fatal blow to a Ballon d'Or campaign; Rodri claimed the award in 2024 ahead of Vinícius Júnior, despite the latter helping Real Madrid lift Europe's top club prize that year.

The key distinction, however, is that Rodri guided Spain to victory at Euro 2024. His international contribution more than compensated for his Champions League shortfall.

Kane lacks an international title to bolster his case the way Rodri did. To compound the issue for the England forward, his main rivals for the 2026 Ballon d'Or are not short of silverware.

Spain Stars Come With the Silverware

Lamine Yamal

Alongside Kane, Lamine Yamal and Rodri are considered leading Ballon d'Or contenders. Both players were instrumental in Spain's World Cup victory this summer, with Rodri in particular taking home the Golden Ball for his outstanding contributions.

Working against the midfielder is his injury-plagued 2025–26 season at Manchester City, during which Rodri was sidelined on five separate occasions due to various physical setbacks. City also missed out on the Premier League and Champions League titles, though they did capture the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Yamal boasts a stronger overall résumé than his compatriot. Although the winger's World Cup statistics were modest—just one goal in eight appearances—he was central to Spain's attacking play throughout the tournament, whether directly or by drawing defenders to the right flank and creating space for his teammates to exploit.

The teenage star also helped Barcelona successfully retain their La Liga and Spanish Super Cup titles last season, contributing 41 goal involvements along the way. With a World Cup winners' medal now added to his collection, Yamal holds the advantage over Kane on paper.

But as Kane acknowledged, it will ultimately come down to the voters and the criteria they consider most important when naming the best male player of 2025–26.
