Bayern Munich are reportedly considering a move for Barcelona and Spain attacking midfielder Dani Olmo in January, with the player having previously featured in Germany for RB Leipzig.
Olmo enjoyed an impressive 2026 World Cup campaign with Spain, starting five of seven games for the title-winning side. However, since returning to club football, he has largely served as a deputy to Fermín López—starting just twice in La Liga this season.
According to Sky Sports, Bayern are "lining up" a winter transfer window bid. The move appears to be driven by contingency planning, amid continued speculation surrounding key creative players Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala.
Olmo is also a natural fit for Bayern given his history at Leipzig and the club's "long-term interest" in him stretching back to his Bundesliga days. The Spaniard joined Leipzig in January 2020—ironically making his debut against Bayern—before Barcelona signed him for $68.3 million (€60 million) in 2024.
The past couple of years have not been without turbulence, as Olmo was forcibly deregistered midway through the 2024–25 season due to Barcelona's financial constraints. He could have departed on a free transfer, but government intervention enabled him to continue playing.
Should Barcelona decide to sell, the reported asking price stands at €70 million ($79.7 million).
Why Barcelona Need to Keep Olmo
Offloading Olmo in January would diminish Barcelona's squad depth. While Fermín may be the first choice in the No. 10 position, Hansi Flick has not overlooked Olmo this season. Despite just two La Liga starts, he was in the starting lineup for the Champions League win over Feyenoord earlier this month and has featured at least as a substitute in every domestic fixture.
His presence is clearly important, especially as Barcelona look to remain competitive across four competitions—most notably in their bid for a third consecutive La Liga title and a first Champions League crown in what will be 12 years by the time of next June's final.
Any setback for Fermín—who missed the World Cup with a broken foot and has suffered four separate muscle injuries over the past two seasons—would leave Barcelona in a difficult position without Olmo available to cover.
From Olmo's own standpoint, he turns 29 before the season concludes. At this point in his career, does he want to continue playing a supporting role? A new challenge at another top club, even one with its own competition for places, could be an attractive proposition.
Olmo has previously left Barcelona in pursuit of career progression, departing La Masia at just 16 for a surprising move to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. He made his debut just months later, still aged 16, and racked up 124 appearances before Leipzig came calling. Olmo earned his first Spain cap while at Dinamo in 2019, vindicating his bold decision to make the switch.
