Bayern Munich Eyes Liverpool and Chelsea Target as Backup Plan for Luis Diaz Deal

If Bayern Munich cannot secure their primary transfer objective Luis Díaz, the Bavarian club has allegedly identified Lyon's winger Malick Fofana as a backup choice.

Bayern's search for left-wing reinforcement is well-documented. Kingsley Coman has managed only 14 goals across his previous 72 matches for the German side, while Leroy Sané departed to Galatasaray as a free agent during the summer window.

Díaz, instrumental in Liverpool's successful 2024–25 Premier League campaign, represents Bayern's main target. The club reportedly submitted an initial €67.5 million (£58.6 million, $78.8 million) proposal for the Colombian international, which Liverpool rejected.

The Bundesliga champions are allegedly preparing an improved offer for the 28-year-old attacker, potentially approaching Liverpool's anticipated valuation of €100 million (£86.8 million, $116.7 million).

Given the uncertainty around this transfer, Bayern have started expanding their list of potential signings. Per Fabrizio Romano, Vincent Kompany's team has identified Fofana as their fallback option should the Díaz pursuit fail.

Fofana previously attracted attention from Liverpool and Chelsea during the summer following his outstanding performances for Lyon. The 20-year-old Belgian represents one of football's most promising young wingers, displaying tremendous potential.

Although receiving limited playing time throughout much of the 2024–25 campaign, Fofana recorded 11 goals and five assists in all competitions. He excelled particularly in Lyon's Europa League run, netting six goals in 10 matches.

The German club has reportedly initiated discussions with Lyon regarding potential terms for the winger's transfer. Fofana's market value is estimated at €60 million (£51.5 million).

Bayern have also been connected with Real Madrid's Rodrygo as another possible Díaz alternative. The Brazilian forward faces transfer rumors following new manager Xabi Alonso's decision to bench him in three of Los Blancos' six FIFA Club World Cup fixtures.
