Bayern Munich Star Fires Back at Arsenal Links: "I'll Show My True Value"

Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha dismissed speculation about a potential summer transfer to Arsenal during a candid reflection on his challenging debut campaign in Germany.

The Portuguese defensive midfielder, previously at Fulham, was originally set to join Bayern in 2023. Following persistent requests from former coach Thomas Tuchel, the German powerhouse nearly completed Palhinha's signing, even preparing promotional photos of him wearing the club jersey.

Nevertheless, Fulham's inability to secure a replacement derailed the transfer at the final stage. Twelve months later, Palhinha eventually arrived in Munich, only to discover that Vincent Kompany had taken over from Tuchel. The former Manchester City captain showed minimal confidence in the defensive specialist during the 2024–25 season.

Limited playing time has fueled rumors that Palhinha might seek a departure this summer, with reports surfacing this week that Arsenal had pursued the Portugal star earlier in the transfer window before negotiations collapsed.

Despite Bayern's apparent willingness to consider offers, Palhinha has emphasized his commitment to remaining and proving himself in Munich.

"I'm contracted [to Bayern] for another three years, so I'll return on July 29 when pre-season training begins," the 30-year-old declared to Sport TV. "Right now, spending these holiday moments with my family and friends matters most.

"About my future, as I've mentioned repeatedly, I have three years remaining on my deal, I'm uncertain what lies ahead, but I'm part of an exceptional club, as I've consistently stated."

Kompany gave Palhinha only six Bundesliga starting appearances during the 2024–25 season. A muscle problem early in the new year further complicated his adjustment to a different league and tactical approach. As an ambitious mid-tier team, Fulham rarely needed to control games—Bayern's philosophy is completely different. In Palhinha's last campaign in west London, the Cottagers maintained roughly 50% possession. Kompany's title-winning side dominated with 68% of possession last season.

"Clearly, this year has been difficult for me," Palhinha acknowledged, "but I remain highly determined to—once the new season begins—demonstrate my abilities again at such a prestigious institution like Bayern, a massive club."
