Bayern Munich Superstar Shocks Barcelona with Bold Transfer Ultimatum

Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka has allegedly expressed to his former manager Hansi Flick just how "thrilled" he would be to reunite under his leadership, this time at Barcelona.

The 30-year-old finds himself at the heart of transfer rumors as he approaches the last six months of his deal with the current Bundesliga titleholders. Bayern Munich have shown no indication of extending Goretzka's contract, prompting the German international to start considering alternative destinations.

The experienced player has already been connected with Atlético Madrid, who are seeking a defensive midfielder if Conor Gallagher proceeds with his anticipated January departure. Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Napoli are also believed to be keeping tabs on developments at the Bavarian outfit.

However, Mundo Deportivo suggests Goretzka has focused his attention on a potential Barcelona transfer should he fail to secure a contract extension. The midfielder communicated his interest by "reaching out" to Flick, under whom he served at Bayern Munich for three seasons.

The Spanish publication indicates Goretzka is "dissatisfied" with his present circumstances; not only has the Germany star become peripheral under Vincent Kompany in European competition, but he also learned that "minimal efforts" will be invested in retaining him beyond this campaign.

Barcelona's Transfer Priorities Clash With Goretzka's Wishes

Acquiring a player of Goretzka's caliber would enhance most squads, but Barcelona already possess a crowded midfield department. Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casadó, Marc Bernal, Gavi, Fermín López, Dani Olmo and Eric García provide Flick with ample options in the center of the field.

Additionally, the primary focus for the defending Spanish champions in January or the upcoming summer window is securing defensive additions. The club never found a replacement for Iñigo Martínez, who departed for Al Nassr on a free transfer last summer, and their defensive vulnerabilities in 2025–26 highlight their urgent need for an experienced center-back to complement Pau Cubarsí.

The Catalans are also searching for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker's contract expires at season's end, with renewal appearing unlikely. Harry Kane remains an aspirational target, but even a forward with lesser profile and potentially lower cost would appeal to Barcelona.

Goretzka therefore finds himself in an uncertain situation, one that even his former manager may be unable to resolve.
