Beckham Hails Inter Miami's Blockbuster World Cup Hero Who Claims Iconic Jersey Number

Newly acquired midfielder Rodrigo De Paul is set to inherit an iconic jersey number upon his debut with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami CF, sporting the prestigious No. 7 for the Florida-based club.

Inter Miami revealed De Paul as their newest high-profile acquisition on Friday, securing the 31-year-old Argentine star on a loan arrangement from Spanish powerhouse Atlético Madrid, including an option to finalize the transfer permanently in 2027.

Though he's anticipated to make his first appearance on July 30 during Leagues Cup competition against Mexican outfit Atlas, he won't be the most renowned figure at the club to sport the No. 7 jersey. That distinction naturally goes to co-owner David Beckham, who famously wore this number during portions of seven campaigns with Manchester United.

Beckham expressed tremendous enthusiasm about landing the World Cup champion and dual Copa América winner.

"Rodrigo is a talent I've respected for numerous years. As a captain, he has contributed immensely to every squad he's represented—particularly with Argentina's national team," Beckham commented regarding De Paul. "He delivers experience, intensity and skill to our roster and to our community. I'm thrilled to welcome another World Cup champion not only to Inter Miami, but to Major League Soccer as well."

De Paul will become the fifth player to don No. 7 for Inter Miami, inheriting the jersey from current Miami striker and MLS veteran Fafá Picault, who took on the number at the beginning of the 2025 campaign.

Beyond Picault, the No. 7 jersey has previously been worn by Matías Rojas and Jean Mota, along with current New York Red Bulls standout and Scotland international Lewis Morgan.

De Paul is scheduled to be formally introduced as an Inter Miami player before the team's Saturday fixture against FC Cincinnati, during which they'll be without Messi and Jordi Alba due to disciplinary action after both players missed the MLS All-Star Game.
