Following consecutive losses, Real Madrid are desperate to bounce back when they take on Girona this Friday night.
The record 15-time European champions saw their La Liga title hopes virtually extinguished last weekend when Mallorca forward Vedat Muriqi grabbed a dramatic late winner, leaving Álvaro Arbeloa's squad seven points behind in the standings.
The situation worsened for Real Madrid when Bayern Munich visited the Bernabéu and inflicted a 2–1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie. However, everything remains up for grabs in the return fixture next week, which could shape Arbeloa's team selection for what now feels like a largely inconsequential league outing.
Major Changes Coming to Real Madrid's XI

Another loss for Real Madrid this weekend, even with the La Liga title race essentially decided, is the last thing the club needs heading into a crucial clash against Vincent Kompany's side. As a result, Arbeloa must tread carefully when deciding who to rest and who to field on Friday.
Antonio Rüdiger is the obvious candidate for a rest, opening the door for Éder Militão to earn a starting berth on Friday. Fran García is also set to come into the side; the left back would likely have been Arbeloa's preferred option against a struggling Girona regardless, but he is now the clear frontrunner following Álvaro Carreras's dismal display against Bayern.
Jude Bellingham is another fresh addition to the starting lineup. The England international is expected to make his first start since recovering from a hamstring injury, with the aim of building match sharpness ahead of the second leg.
Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo remain sidelined, while Ferland Mendy is targeting some substitute minutes. Franco Mastantuono is unavailable due to suspension.
Real Madrid Predicted Lineup vs. Girona (4-3-1-2)

GK: Andriy Lunin—The goalkeeper continues to deputize for the injured Thibaut Courtois. He is still waiting to record his first clean sheet of the campaign.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold—Alexander-Arnold is finally finding his rhythm... going forward. Defensive vulnerabilities continue to plague the former Liverpool man, though he has registered three assists across his last three outings.
CB: Éder Militão—For the first time in four months, Militão earns a spot in the starting XI. The Brazilian has logged just 59 minutes in 2026, but he appears sharp and fully ready to reclaim his position in Real Madrid's defense.
CB: Dean Huijsen—Huijsen is on track for a solid finish to the season, though it has largely been a debut campaign to forget. His starting role will almost certainly be reclaimed by Militão going forward.
LB: Fran García—The Spaniard reclaims his spot on the left side following a dreadful midweek performance from Álvaro Carreras. Both players remain second-choice options behind Ferland Mendy.
CM: Federico Valverde—Valverde's electric form propelled Real Madrid through their recent run of wins, but the team cannot expect the midfielder to score every game, particularly when he is shouldering the workload of multiple players.
CM: Aurélien Tchouaméni—Under normal circumstances the Frenchman would be a prime candidate for a rest, but his suspension for the second leg means he is free to feature in La Liga.
CM: Eduardo Camavinga—Arbeloa confirmed Camavinga will start on Friday, a somewhat eyebrow-raising call given the midfielder's uninspired showing last weekend against Mallorca.
AM: Jude Bellingham—The creative midfielder looks primed to start, judging by his impressive substitute appearance against Bayern. Real Madrid have sorely felt his absence.
ST: Kylian Mbappé—It was his goal that kept Real Madrid's Champions League hopes alive, but the French star was far from his sharpest. He continues to chase the clinical edge he displayed at the beginning of the season.
ST: Vinicius Junior—The Brazilian is likely still haunted by the golden opportunity he wasted and his costly error on Tuesday night. Only a direct goal contribution will restore the Bernabéu faithful's faith in him.
