Jude Bellingham hinted that his role on the pitch may have contributed to a below-par Real Madrid campaign in 2025–26, drawing a direct contrast with his impressive performances for England at the World Cup in North America so far.
Bellingham has claimed FIFA's official Player of the Match award in each of England's last two fixtures. Although the midfielder openly admitted he "didn't deserve it" following the 0–0 stalemate with Ghana, he proved absolutely pivotal in Saturday's vital victory over Panama.
Bellingham netted the opener for the Three Lions before teeing up Harry Kane for the second, playing a central role in the 2–0 result. The 22-year-old also led the pitch in chances created (4) and successful dribbles (3), according to FotMob.
Against Croatia, he also found the net and registered six touches inside the opposition's penalty area.
"I don't know if this Bellingham is the best of the season," the player told reporters when asked about his World Cup displays. "I hope to have the best Bellingham for the rest [of the tournament]."
When pushed to elaborate on his sudden improvement, Bellingham pointed to his positioning. "I don't think it's a confidence issue. At Real Madrid I played differently, a bit deeper. With England, I'm a No. 10 or even a slightly more advanced No. 8.
"I don't care where I play on the field, the position. I always want to play well for my team."
