Benjamin Sesko Benched: The Shocking Reason He's Missing Man Utd's Clash Against Aston Villa

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has relegated Benjamin Šeško to the substitutes' bench for Aston Villa's arrival, bringing Amad Diallo back into the starting eleven while moving Bryan Mbeumo forward into the striker position.

Šeško has made his most significant contributions as a substitute for United, although he did net the decisive goal against Crystal Palace on March 1 during a 2–1 turnaround victory at Old Trafford. He failed to find the net in the previous outing as United suffered a 2–1 loss to Newcastle at St James' Park.

Mbeumo has delivered some of his finest performances when deployed as an aggressive central striker, and Carrick has chosen to return the Cameroonian to that role—undoubtedly hoping he can end a four-game goalless run.

United's swift transformation under Carrick, beyond discarding Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system, has depended on a structured high press that has pressured opposing backlines. Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have all succumbed to this enhanced Red Devils side, frequently forced into errors by the relentless work rate of Mbeumo, Amad, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha.

Amad's dynamism on the right flank has been impressive, with his capacity to drop deep and assist either Diogo Dalot—also returned to the first team by Carrick—or Noussair Mazraoui providing additional value. Mbeumo provides similar work rate to Amad but lacks the same defensive sharpness—an aspect the latter enhanced when functioning as a right wing-back under Amorim.

Amad can also be counted on to complete the entire 90 minutes, which he's accomplished in five of his last seven Premier League starts. Šeško has significantly fewer complete matches to his name and has shown effectiveness as a substitute for United, coming on for either Mbeumo or Cunha based on match circumstances.

Aston Villa have dealt with injury concerns, but they remain a robust defensive outfit capable of withstanding pressure and are known for being challenging to break down. This is why Carrick might seek to damage the Villans through rapid counter-attacks—something Mbeumo, Cunha and Amad possess in abundance but Šeško lacks, as he's fast at top speed but doesn't have the same initial burst.

During his pre-game press conference, Carrick acknowledged that removing Šeško from the starting lineup was a challenging choice.

"Yeah, we've got quality attacking options to select from, and it's about finding the right mix for each match." he explained to Sky Sports. "Whether that's beginning the game, or making an impact as a substitute.

"I believe across these eight matches, we've seen valuable contributions in various ways from the bench and that's crucial to our approach. So it's about achieving that proper balance. It wasn't a simple choice, but the players have all embraced it excellently ... so they're prepared."

Šeško will be available from the bench, whether United are ahead, behind or level, and will be eager to add to the eight Premier League strikes he's already scored in United colors.
