Benjamin Sesko Sparks Transfer Frenzy as Man Utd Secure Deal While Newcastle's Bid Gets Green Light
Both Manchester United and Newcastle United have made substantial headway in their chase for Benjamin Šeško, though the coveted forward is anticipated to head to Old Trafford following a chaotic summer transfer window.
Newcastle have taken a more aggressive stance in pursuing the 22-year-old striker throughout the summer months. After it became apparent that Alexander Isak was determined to move to Liverpool, the Magpies redirected their attention toward finding his successor. Eddie Howe's team, whose struggling transfer operations have been overseen by the manager's nephew Andy this summer, allegedly submitted two official bids before United finally presented their initial offer.
Following two unsuccessful attempts to reach Leipzig's steep asking price, Newcastle had a proposal valued at €82.5 million (£71.8 million, $95.4 million) upfront plus €2.5 million (£2.2 million, $2.9 million) in bonuses approved on Tuesday evening, as reported by The Athletic.
Although the club is prepared to send Šeško to Tyneside, the Slovenian striker seems to be favoring a destination slightly further south. While last season's top goalscorer practiced separately from his squad, reports surfaced that United was his preferred choice. All three clubs involved are believed to understand this position, encouraging Leipzig to accelerate their negotiations with the Manchester club.
The Red Devils' most recent reported proposal matches Newcastle's accepted offer in total value—€85 million (£74 million, $98.3 million)—but consists of an initial €75 million (£65.3 million, $86.8 million), with the remaining €10 million (£8.7 million, $11.6 million) structured as performance bonuses.
As inter-club discussions continue, United have allegedly achieved "complete agreement" on personal terms with the player, according to Fabrizio Romano. Šeško is believed to have agreed to a deal running through June 2030.
United have consistently shown their capacity to lure elite players despite enduring their poorest Premier League season in the club's history. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo both cited the legendary appeal of the competition's most decorated franchise after joining a team that concluded 15th last season.
"Naturally, I understand it's been a difficult campaign for everyone," Cunha admitted. "I believe my choice demonstrates what this institution means to me, and what I think this club can become." Šeško seems to share this conviction.
