Real Madrid have announced the acquisition of midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer.
The ex-Manchester City stalwart departed the Etihad after his contract ran out and had been widely tipped to join Barcelona, but a personal call from new Madrid boss José Mourinho convinced Silva to cross the Clásico divide and join the Spanish capital club instead.
The 31-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year deal, tying himself to Los Blancos through the summer of 2028.
He becomes the second confirmed addition of the Mourinho era, following left back Marc Cucurella through the door. Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries are both anticipated to complete their moves in the near future.
Mourinho Lands A Season-Shaping Masterstroke

Anyone who followed Silva through his final campaign at Man City will know his departure had nothing to do with a decline in ability.
As he closes in on his 32nd birthday, Silva would be the first to acknowledge he is not quite the same physical force he once was, yet his performances last season were as impressive as anything he produced under Pep Guardiola, as he reinvented his game with remarkable precision.
The 2025–26 season opened with Silva deployed in an advanced midfield position, but concluded with him settling into a deeper role, relying on his intelligence rather than his pace to dismantle opposing sides.
To suggest he can no longer handle the rigors of an attacking position would be a gross understatement, but it felt as though Silva was extending his career by half a decade as he unveiled a fresh dimension to his game in defensive midfield.
Madrid, blessed with an abundance of attacking talent, have little need for the Silva of old. What they desperately require is the evolved Silva—a calm, seasoned orchestrator at the base of midfield. Ring any bells, Madrid supporters?
Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos spent years pulling the strings deep in Madrid's engine room, and Silva appears destined to walk a similar path as a quietly influential yet indispensable presence at the Bernabéu.

The last twelve months demonstrated that Silva can thrive in a deeper position, controlling the tempo of play while never neglecting his defensive responsibilities. He let his attacking teammates steal the spotlight, but few City supporters would question just how vital he was to the team.
On the field, Silva's attributes speak for themselves, but he could prove equally valuable to Mourinho in the dressing room as the Portuguese manager seeks to restore a winning mentality within the Madrid camp.
Last season's alarming internal discord will not be permitted to continue, and Silva, a consummate professional throughout his entire career, will serve as a benchmark for those around him. He understands what it takes to succeed at the very pinnacle of the game—something that several figures within Madrid seem to have lost sight of in recent times.
Every player in the squad will be encouraged to observe and take inspiration from Silva, whom Mourinho hopes will play a central role in correcting the mistakes of last season.
