Brazilian soccer icon Marcelo has become the latest voice to enter the long-standing debate: Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo.
The recently retired left back brings a unique perspective, having gone up against the attacking brilliance of both generational superstars at the peak of their powers.
While Marcelo was a teammate and close friend of Ronaldo throughout their lengthy, overlapping—and silverware-filled—time at La Liga giants Real Madrid (2009–18), he was also tasked with marking the Portuguese star when Brazil took on Portugal in an international friendly back in November 2008.
The encounter between Marcelo and Ronaldo nearly turned physical in the closing moments of Brazil's 6–2 victory. Following a tough challenge, Ronaldo elbowed Marcelo, who responded with a kick. Ronaldo then grabbed Marcelo by the neck before the two were separated. It was a rocky beginning to what would become a lasting friendship, as Real Madrid brought Ronaldo to the club just a few months later.
Marcelo, of course, crossed paths with former Barcelona star Messi on countless occasions, as the two lined up on opposing sides of La Liga's fiercest rivalry for over a decade. For 15 consecutive years (2006–21), Marcelo squared off against Messi in El Clásico.
Who Was Tougher to Face, Messi or Ronaldo?

"Messi [was tougher to face]," Marcelo told RomárioTV on Wednesday. "Messi was something else — I'm still out here looking for him to this day, d--- it."
"Man, he is truly something special... Messi has a complete understanding of every position on the pitch. He knows when a player is coming with the ball. He already knows where to move, where to find space. I think he is just extraordinary."
Ronaldo became the first player in football history to surpass 900 career goals, reaching that milestone in September 2024. Now sitting at 967 goals, the 41-year-old has his eyes firmly set on the 1,000-goal mark before hanging up his boots. Messi, 38, recently joined him in that elite club, netting his 900th goal in a Concacaf Champions Cup match for Inter Miami on March 18.
Despite Ronaldo holding the higher overall tally, Messi actually edges him out in minutes per goal — 104 minutes compared to 111. With 407 career assists, Messi also boasts more total goal contributions (1,310) than Ronaldo, who has recorded 261 assists for a total of 1,228 goal contributions.
What's in Marcelo's Trophy Case?

Marcelo ranks among the most decorated players in Real Madrid's storied history. Over 16 seasons and 546 appearances for the club (2006–22), he lifted 25 trophies, including five Champions League titles, six La Liga crowns, four Club World Cups, five Spanish Super Cups, and two Copa del Rey honors.
Marcelo earned 58 caps for the Seleção over a 12-year international career (2006–18), contributing to a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Having appeared in three FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018), the one glaring absence from the Brazilian's impressive trophy collection remains a World Cup title — something Messi finally claimed with Argentina at the 2022 Qatar tournament, and that Ronaldo may have just one final opportunity to win this summer.
When asked on Wednesday whether he would trade his five Champions League medals for a World Cup triumph with Brazil, Marcelo delivered a surprising response.
"That question is wild," he said. "I'll be honest with you. Yes, I would make that trade."
Marcelo's candid admission only adds to the anticipation surrounding the 2026 World Cup, which gets underway in North America in just 10 weeks. While Marcelo will be watching as a spectator, both Ronaldo and Messi are set to feature, with the tournament marking a historic sixth World Cup appearance for each of them.
