Brighton's Bold Move Forces Man Utd Into Crucial Carlos Baleba Transfer Showdown

Manchester United have reportedly abandoned their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba following the Seagulls' unwillingness to enter meaningful discussions, according to recent reports.
The central midfield position remains a priority area for United boss Ruben Amorim, and it was reported earlier this month that the 21-year-old Baleba topped their recruitment list. However, Brighton's firm stance on retaining their prized midfielder always suggested any potential transfer would face significant obstacles.
The Athletic reports that United and Brighton engaged in direct discussions regarding Baleba's potential move, but both clubs concluded the talks believing no progress would be made before the current transfer window closes.
Brighton are determined to retain Baleba, who remains tied to the club until 2028 with an additional year's option, and informed United that securing his services would require a fee comparable to the £115 million ($156 million) Chelsea invested in Moisés Caicedo two seasons ago.

Obviously, having already invested over £200 million in offensive additions Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, such an expenditure appears completely unrealistic for United, and the club is not anticipated to renew their interest in Baleba this summer.
While Baleba is reportedly content at Brighton, he is believed to harbor ambitions of joining United eventually and will continue to "push" for a future move to Old Trafford, though there's recognition that such a transfer won't materialize this year.
Amorim has been transparent about his midfield reinforcement needs, but financial resources are clearly constrained without substantial player departures, while club leadership remains committed to prudent spending and harbors reservations about investing such a substantial sum in Baleba given his limited two-year Premier League track record.
The club will explore alternative options and hopes to finance acquisitions through the departures of Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho, with the latter being targeted by Roma in a loan deal featuring a mandatory purchase clause valued at approximately £20 million.
