Bruno Fernandes has matched Cristiano Ronaldo's record of six Premier League Player of the Month awards, reaching the milestone faster than his fellow Portuguese star after claiming the honor for March 2025. No other Manchester United player throughout the award's history can rival either Portuguese icon, and only three players across all clubs have received the accolade more frequently.

Fernandes earned his latest honor following an extraordinary run of form. Reinstated to his preferred role as the attacking midfield hub around which all United's offensive play revolves, the 31-year-old netted twice and contributed four assists across four top-flight outings throughout March.

Benjamin Šeško's effort against Aston Villa was the sole United goal last month that didn't bear Fernandes's fingerprints in some way.

Despite being a consistent ray of hope amid Manchester United's turbulent recent years, this marks Fernandes's first individual accolade in 12 months. Prior to claiming the March 2025 prize, the Portugal international had gone unrecognized since his debut season at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was no stranger to periods of exceptional form himself.

The 2006 World Cup proved to be a genuine turning point for Ronaldo. Having initially made his mark as a fleet-footed trickster with flowing hair after joining United in 2004, the winger's flashy style began to frustrate his more seasoned teammates. The Red Devils fell short of the Premier League title in both of his opening seasons, and Ronaldo returned to England in 2006 having helped knock out the Three Lions with Portugal at that summer's tournament.

"He came back from the 2006 World Cup and his maturity had changed," Ronaldo's United teammate Gary Neville recalled. "His appearance and physical attributes completely changed overnight.

"He was scrawny, wiry and not very strong and then all of a sudden he was a supper middleweight boxer. He was incredible from a strength point of view and the ability to leap, change direction, everything fell into place. From that moment on you knew he was going to be really special."

"He was one of the few players that would announce that individual trophies were important to him," Neville added. Which suggests that Fernandes's latest achievement won't have gone down well.

Fernandes may have drawn level with Ronaldo's benchmark, but he still requires one further individual honor to equal the all-time Premier League record jointly held by Sergio Agüero, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah.

The latter could theoretically add to his personal tally before departing Liverpool at the end of the season. However, his performances throughout this campaign suggest that outcome is unlikely.

The April and May awards still remain up for grabs, with Fernandes's attention fully fixed on the Premier League given Manchester United's early exits from other competitions. The Red Devils face Leeds United, Chelsea and Brentford this month before rounding out the season against Liverpool, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion.
