Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has expressed full confidence that Bruno Fernandes will remain at the club, stating that the bond between the player and the club is plain for everyone to see.
That sentiment would have seemed far-fetched a year ago. Following a dismal 15th-place finish and a gut-wrenching Europa League final defeat, United seriously weighed up selling their influential playmaker—according to Fernandes himself. Ruben Amorim battled to retain his fellow Portuguese, who repaid that faith with one of the most remarkable statistical campaigns in Premier League history (even as Amorim was dismissed partway through the season).
Much like his predecessor, Carrick is firmly determined to hold onto Fernandes as the player enters the final year of his Manchester United deal.
When asked whether his skipper would still be at Old Trafford when the 2026–27 season kicks off, Carrick responded: "I've got no reason to think otherwise.
"We've loved what he's done, and he loves being here. I think you can see that. He's such an influence for us. He's been the captain and led by example in different ways. He wants to stay on every single game because he's enjoying his football, which is fantastic."
Fernandes's Contract Situation Raises Questions

Fernandes turns 32 in September and is acutely aware of how quickly age becomes a factor in Premier League boardroom decisions. "In England," he remarked earlier this season, "when a player starts to approach 30, they start to think they need to remodel. It's like the furniture."
Negotiations over a fresh contract are anticipated to begin in the coming weeks, BBC Sport reports. Manchester United are believed to hold the option of automatically extending Fernandes's current deal by one additional year, but with the World Cup on the horizon, United's standout performer is on course to become a free agent at the conclusion of next season.
Following Casemiro's departure, Fernandes now stands as Manchester United's highest earner, with his wages elevated to approximately $470,000 per week following the club's return to Champions League football. That places the seasoned midfielder among the Premier League's top earners, meaning any potential pay rise would represent a significant financial commitment.
Will Man Utd Make the Same Mistakes As Liverpool?

The real question for United is not, "Does Bruno Fernandes currently deserve a contract extension?" That answer is self-evident. Rather, if the club wishes to maintain any credibility as a well-run organisation, they must ask themselves, "Will Fernandes justify the enormous wages he commands by the tail end of whatever new deal he is offered?"
As United's closest rivals have learned at considerable expense, those are two entirely different questions.
Both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah were consistently delivering performances that justified the staggering wage packets Liverpool ultimately agreed to when those contracts were signed last April. Yet once the euphoria of title glory had faded, it became clear the club may have overcommitted with two-year extensions.
Liverpool were fortunate that Arne Slot managed to frustrate Salah enough that the Egyptian agreed to cut his contract short by a year. Van Dijk, meanwhile, has shown no inclination to relinquish his status as the world's highest-paid centre-back, despite performances that fall well short of justifying that distinction.
As Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his cost-cutting agenda have demonstrated throughout his tenure as co-owner, this frugal version of United has no appetite for financial waste. If non-playing staff are restricted to fruit in the canteen, it would seem contradictory to burn through those savings on a single week's wages from a new three-year deal for a 31-year-old.
The most logical approach would surely be to activate the one-year extension clause in Fernandes's contract and use the following 12 months to identify a successor while also building a system that is not so heavily reliant on a single player.
