Bundesliga Giants Eye Norwich City's Josh Sargent in Transfer Swoop

Is the Bundesliga poised to emerge as the premier destination for American talent in European football?

On Friday, GiveMeSport revealed that U.S. men's national team forward Josh Sargent might be heading to VfL Wolfsburg from Norwich City in the English Championship, news that surfaced just days following another USMNT standout, Malik Tillman, joining the reigning Bundesliga titleholders, Bayer Leverkusen.

The report indicates that Wolfsburg are nearing an agreement on a transfer sum with the Championship club, with negotiations centering around £21 million ($28 million). Nevertheless, they weren't alone in their pursuit, as Premier League outfit Burnley also expressed early interest in the 25-year-old American forward.

Although Sargent has battled injuries throughout his professional journey, affecting both his club and USMNT contributions, his 2024-25 campaign marked a return to peak performance.

Across 32 outings for Norwich, he netted 15 times while providing five assists, securing selection in the EFL Championship team of the season and bringing his three-year tally in England's second tier to 44 goals and nine assists.

A transfer to Germany would represent a homecoming of sorts for his career trajectory. Prior to his 2021 move to England and Norwich, Sargent found the net 13 times across 73 matches for Werder Bremen following his promotion to the senior squad in 2018.

The O'Fallon, Missouri native's European performances have secured his place in the USMNT setup, where he has found the back of the net five times in 28 caps, including substantial playing time during the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His most recent USMNT appearance occurred during the Concacaf Nations League semifinal in March 2025, featuring for 68 minutes in a defeat to Panama, while his last international goal came in November 2019 when he scored twice in a commanding 4–0 victory over Cuba.

If completed at $28 million, this transfer would represent the fifth-largest fee paid for an American player historically, falling behind only Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman, Folarin Balogun, and Brendan Aaronson, while surpassing Tyler Adams' switch from Leeds United to AFC Bournemouth.

VfL Wolfsburg are scheduled to begin their 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign on Aug. 23 facing 1. FC Heidenheim, while Norwich prepare for their Championship season opener against Millwall on Aug. 9.
