Can 16-Year-Old Prodigy Cavan Sullivan Conquer Man City Right Now?

The name "Cavan Sullivan" has become impossible to ignore in Major League Soccer.

The Philadelphia Union's 16-year-old phenom added yet another record to his collection on Saturday night after netting a 75th-minute rebound in a 2–0 win over CF Montréal. The left-footed strike was followed by the attack-minded midfielder performing LeBron James's iconic 'Chalk Toss' celebration, a nod to the Philadelphia 76ers' high-profile offseason signing of the basketball superstar.

Back in 2024, Sullivan, aged 14 years and 293 days, surpassed former soccer prodigy Freddy Adu to become the youngest player in league history to make his debut. Making history is nothing new for Sullivan, and Saturday's goal added another chapter to his story.

Registering his fifth goal contribution in as many matches, the Philly-born talent shattered another long-standing Adu record — this time for the most goal contributions by a player aged 16 or under in a single season. Adu had tallied 10 goal contributions in 2005, and Sullivan has now surpassed that mark with 11 — four goals and seven assists — with no signs of stopping.

"I was in the box, that's where things happen," Sullivan told reporters after the match. "I followed it up ... it was at that awkward height where it just slid right in. I'm really happy."

"And the celebration — I'd been waiting to do that for a while. I had Kim, our photographer, holding the chalk for several games. I just kept missing my chance, or I was away. But tonight, great crowd, and the timing was perfect."

Across all competitions this season, Sullivan has racked up 14 goal contributions (seven goals and seven assists in 27 appearances), with half of those coming in just six outings over the past month. Sullivan credits his upturn in form to interim manager Ryan Richter, who has placed greater trust in the teenager, recognized his potential, and handed him more consistent starts.

"He is finishing plays off," Richter said after the match. "Getting himself into positions to score goals that don't all need to be like his goal against Red Bull [New York on Aug. 29], when he makes an incredible individual play.

"You can contribute to the game and get your goals and assists, be decisive and productive by being in the right place at the right time. And that's exactly where he was tonight, and he finished the play well."

Sullivan's attacking brilliance has been central to the Union's own revival, as the club has gone unbeaten in their last eight league matches, climbing from the bottom of the standings to ninth place in the Eastern Conference. It marks the first time all season that the Union have held a playoff position.

The teenager's Homegrown contract contains a clause that will see him move to English Premier League powerhouse Manchester City upon turning 18. Having wasted no time making his mark in MLS, the rising star looks primed for a more demanding stage and an even brighter spotlight.

'Keep in Touch'—Cavan Sullivan Eyes Premier League Future

Dominating MLS is clearly Sullivan's immediate priority, but the youngster is also keeping a close eye on developments across the Atlantic.

"We keep in touch," Sullivan told Sports Illustrated about the blue half of Manchester. "But mainly I'm just focused on doing my thing here."

The Cityzens had an eventful summer transfer window, assembling an entirely new — and enormously expensive — midfield ahead of the 2026–27 campaign, one that Sullivan could realistically factor into further down the road.

New manager Enzo Maresca's most notable acquisition was Enzo Fernández from Chelsea on a deal through 2031 for a Premier League record-equaling $169 million (£125 million), excluding bonuses. The Argentine star was joined by fellow costly signings Elliot Anderson ($153 million, £116 million) and Ayyoub Bouaddi ($117 million, £86 million) in the engine room, forming a new midfield valued at a staggering $439 million (£327 million). Anderson and Bouaddi are also contracted through 2031, meaning they will still be at the club long after Sullivan is set to arrive in 2028.

"They got some really good signings, guys on long-term contracts and maybe future teammates," Sullivan added. "It's cool to see and think about."
