Can Bukayo Saka Defy the Odds and Return for Crucial Champions League Semifinal Clash?

Mikel Arteta cautioned that Arsenal must "be careful" about overloading Bukayo Saka after the returning winger was substituted as a precaution following just 45 minutes of Saturday's win against Fulham.

Saka had spent the opening half of a commanding 3–0 triumph tormenting whichever Fulham defender was unfortunate enough to face him. Raúl Jiménez was knocked down by the Gunners vice-captain as he teed up Viktor Gyökeres's opener before Saka added one of his own with a clean finish in the 40th minute. Gyökeres rounded off the match just before the break with a third goal, which sealed Arteta's decision to withdraw his No. 7.

"We had to," the Arsenal manager admitted. "He played 30-odd minutes in Madrid, now he's played 45 minutes. We need to ramp up his load but we need to be careful because we need him on that pitch."

This explanation will serve as a significant boost for the Gunners, who are gearing up for the second leg of their Champions League semifinal against Atlético Madrid on Tuesday with the tie finely balanced at 1–1. Given the quality of Saka's display and the recent struggles of his teammates, his comeback has arrived at the perfect moment.

Saka's Return Comes at Just the Right Time

Following his decisive first-half contribution, Saka was replaced by Noni Madueke. The summer signing enjoyed a promising start to his debut season while covering for his injured compatriot but—much like Saka himself—has seen his output decline after being called upon for so many consecutive appearances.

Madueke has failed to register a goal or an assist against top-flight opposition since heading in the opener of a 1–1 draw with Brentford back in February. On the other flank, Leandro Trossard may have set up Gyökeres's third goal but is still awaiting his first strike of 2026. Gabriel Martinelli has gone over three months without finding the net.

During these goal droughts from Arsenal's wide players, Saka has been absent for 10 matches through injury. Arteta was understandably delighted to have his returning key man fit enough to at least feature from the start.

"We know what he's capable of," the Basque boss said with a smile. "He's come back at the most crucial stage of the season and now he's fresh, his mind is fresh, his hunger is at its peak and I think he needed a performance like that to make an impact on the team, so that's a great platform for Tuesday."

Despite the optimism surrounding Saka's involvement against Atlético Madrid at the Emirates, he struggled during his 22-minute substitute appearance in the first leg in Spain. That may have been a matter of not getting up to speed in a high-pressure match, and there is confidence he will perform better from the start on Tuesday. The identity of his teammates for that fixture, however, remains uncertain.

Arsenal Injury Doubts for Champions League Semifinal vs. Atlético Madrid

Martin Ødegaard

Saka's availability has not entirely freed Arteta from fitness concerns ahead of Tuesday's crucial European clash. Martin Ødegaard was absent altogether from Saturday's league fixture after reportedly picking up knee discomfort during the first leg against Atlético.

Kai Havertz also sat out the London derby with a muscular issue, though there is optimism that the German forward could return during the midweek fixture. Jurriën Timber's recovery timeline remains far more unclear, with Arteta continuing to withhold any definitive updates on the key right back.

Mikel Merino is unlikely to feature just yet, though the possibility of another Arsenal appearance for the sidelined midfielder has not been completely ruled out.
