Can Estevao Secure His Spot in Brazil's 2026 World Cup Squad?

Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane offered little reassurance when addressing Estêvão's prospects of representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup. "I'm not sure," was the uncertain response he left hanging in the air.

The gifted teenager has suffered a injury-plagued second half of his first season in west London. A hamstring problem in February kept Estêvão out of Carlo Ancelotti's latest Brazil squad ahead of his World Cup selection announcement this summer, though the youngster did manage to return to the pitch in late March.

After being given three straight starts, Estêvão broke down again just 15 minutes into Chelsea's loss to Manchester United. The ex-Palmeiras talent immediately sought medical assistance before carefully limping off the field. He was left in tears in the changing room.

McFarlane confirmed that Estêvão "won't play for us this season" in the build-up to Sunday's FA Cup semifinal against Leeds United. "He's going to be out for a little bit of time. So, that's really unfortunate, especially for someone so young and so talented. But we're here to support him and be around him."

When pressed specifically on the Brazilian's potential World Cup participation, McFarlane could only offer a shrug. "I'm not sure on that, if I'm honest," the caretaker manager responded. "I just know that he won't be available for us. So, I'm sure he's very hopeful he can make the World Cup. I don't know on that."

Ancelotti's Estevao Stance Gives Chelsea Youngster Hope

When Ancelotti was named Brazil head coach last summer, most anticipated that his former Real Madrid attackers, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, would anchor the Seleção's attack. Yet it was the cheerful young Chelsea star who captured the Italian's attention.

"He is a very, very special player," Ancelotti enthused when speaking about the nimble winger with ESPN Brasil earlier this season. "He is very different because he has a big natural talent. It doesn't mean that he is 100% developed because of his age. In terms of his talent, he can't improve it but what he can do is to give continuity."

The former Chelsea manager was also delighted by Estêvão's choice to move to the rigorous environment of the Premier League, where he can sharpen "the physical aspect, the tactical learning and the mental approach" of his game.

"Estêvão will be at the World Cup," Ancelotti declared. Injury and misfortune may tell a different story.

How Neymar Can Benefit From Estevao Injury

Neymar

Should Estêvão be fast-tracked back into the national squad despite his recent injury absences, Neymar Jr could have grounds for complaint. Brazil's all-time leading scorer has repeatedly been left off the roster by Ancelotti after struggling to demonstrate consistent fitness.

The fading 34-year-old has lately managed a run of back-to-back appearances for Santos—amid fan controversies and allegations of misogyny—in a last-ditch bid for what would almost certainly be his final World Cup appearance.

Whether Ancelotti can be swayed remains to be seen. While every squad announcement brings the predictable drama of Neymar's exclusion, consider the pressure Ancelotti would place on himself if he selects Pelé's ageing heir and then fails to start him in every World Cup fixture.

Rather than the faded former superstar, Ancelotti could look to a future talent in Bournemouth's Rayan, who earned his first international cap in March. Zenit's dynamic forward Luiz Henrique sits higher in the pecking order than his teenage compatriot, while Barcelona's Raphinha would likely be the frontrunner for the right wing spot, provided he recovers from his own hamstring setback.

Arsenal attacker Gabriel Martinelli could also be considered, though he frequently appears ill-suited when forced onto the right flank, where his predictable habit of cutting inside onto his stronger right foot becomes entirely ineffective.
